You just have to make a post on your Facebook profile saying that you don’t consent and that you retain all rights. Bonus points for working in some sovcit stuff.

If your fingers are crossed when you check the “I Agree” box on their TOS then the terms are legally reversed and you control Meta’s content rather than the other way around. It’s in the Magna Carta.

Those adorable baby photos you posted for your friends and family? Sorry, they’re Meta’s now.

You literally gave them to Meta. You uploaded them to Meta after agreeing to Meta’s terms of service, which essentially say “we can do what we want with the stuff you give us.” Big Bad Meta isn’t sneaking into your houses and stealing photos off of your nightstand, they’re not “seizing” anything.

Also, Meta’s AI “pipe dream” has so far been very successful. Their open-source libraries and LLaMA models have become industry standards. Their future work is likely to be productive.

Social media loves to have targets that “everyone agrees” are terrible and worthy of hating. Being part of a righteously angry mob is fun, gives a nice safe dopamine hit and lets you show you are part of the in-group.

Which isn’t to say that Meta is innocent and Zuckerberg is a poor victim, of course. But it does mean that it’s very easy to go overboard and believe false accusations that also fit with the narrative that Meta is terrible and awful and evil. There was a post a couple of weeks ago about Threads and the narrative in that conversation was that Meta was dedicated to eradicating open source (Embrace Extend Extinguish, think of XMPP!). I tried pointing out Meta’s many contributions to open source but redirecting the mob was hopeless. Sure, the motives of these contributions are selfish. They want to crush their enemies. But in this case their enemies are OpenAI and Microsoft, and the weapon they’re using is to fling open the walled gardens OpenAI depends on for the common man to enjoy.

It’s a useful cautionary tale to keep in mind whenever there’s a target that everyone around you hates because they’re “obviously” the devil. Maybe they are, but it’s likely more complicated than it seems.

Congrats, Lemmy is usually a vocal critic against those that “only care about issues when they affect them personally” but you managed to get upvotes.

I am not holding it against you, bias is human but it is something some of us should reflect about.

The people still back on the matrix major platforms still do things that affect you indirectly like voting, buying things that shape everyone’s market, or having their cognitive biases explored, listed and exploited in ways that yours may also be by pr firms.

Yeah I suppose that’s pretty fair.

My only defense I suppose is that regardless of their data being harvested. They vote against their own interests.

They have been warned for decades that their data was being harvested. They did not listen because they do not care. They do not vote for things that would improve my life. So even if the statement is correct.

It does not change the outcome. People will vote for what they want. We are not altruistic.

We should be. As things that improve others will inherently impact us. As voting for selfish reasons will folly us all the same.

your reasoning does fit the spitit of this list. You dont care because its not your data.To be clear, i am not faulting you for having that opinion even while i personally disagree, i am trying to speak out about a rather noticeable case of double standards within the community.

Right, this can get confusing. I’ll give t a go.

Lemmy.world is the community you are a part off, its also the community the meme example i shared on.

A community is not the same as a subreddit but as a tiny full reddit. Its run by admins who set rules and standards for the entire server they own and with tends to come sort of ideology. When you go to lemmy by default you will see the frontpage of your community only.

@memes, @technology within a community are call places but i don’t like that naming. They are like a subreddit and i find they actually have the strongest community feeling and guarded ideologies. They are much smaller so if you see double standards within one of those its usually a sign of an echo chamber. This was not such a case.

Theres also the fediverse. Which is all lemmy and related servers that are federated. This is the bigger lemmy community that curates what gets to the front page of “all” because most of lemmy is progressive and safe for minorities other communities servers that openly welcome nazis and c-abusers have been defederated so they can no longer see or interact with eachother. If you both comment on the post on a neutral server then you wont even see eachother comments

Its very likely that at least one of the People upvoting you saw that meme 2 days earlier and thought “yeah they only care when they are affected, which is obviously wrong and i would never do it” simultaneously id expect people who felt really strong about that meme to be perceptive enough to recognize it in your comment and downvote it. (No offense) but because it was about Facebook, many peopl on lemmy dont have facebook. We all passionately hate it. You basically got people agreeing against their own ideology, which is again normal but does weaken that ideology.

Progressives like me should strive to care against that are wrong no matter if its us or someone else. I am not from ukraine or palestine, i dont have family or friends there but i know people are suffering and i want a better world for them, likeways i want the boomer population on facebook to have a better world where there data isn’t routinely stolen by Bigtech.

That is a lot of thinking. It’s interesting you mentioned echo chamber then go on to describe an echo chamber. Nobody on any subreddit lemmy nor community all have the same thoughts and feelings.

So there shouldn’t be a single idea. That’s not a good thing. For humanity to work, discourse is required.

Single ideologies that are narrow and never wavering are pretty bad news.

                See example Nazi Germany.

Exactly, there is nothing wrong with your opinion or stance, i am raising awareness to a particularly subgroup of people that needed it. Cause i saw signals that they where around.

I kinda wish there was a way to comment without Having to bother you in the process.

Rereading the chain i should have worded it better to not sound so assuming that you where present at “yesterday’s meme rally” . Bias on my part. Excuzedmoi

I cant see the up/downvote ratio but i still expect many people here are hypocrites.

        • Virtually every app on your phone has facebook/instagram trackers that gets access to whatever data that app has access to
        • Their ad network (that runs broadly across the internet) is not only known to fingerprint everyone that sees an ad. They’ve pioneered new was of keeping track of you even if your browser fingerprint changes.
        • Facebook (and one assumes Threads/Instagram) create ghost profiles of everyone mentioned or photographed in any posts on their platform if they can’t link that mined data to an actual account. So if your friends use the platform, then you do too, whether you know it or not.
        • Cambridge Analytica is probably not the only company doing that stuff, they’re just the ones that got caught.

That’s not an exhaustive list, mind you.

A quick Googling of “phones without Facebook” gives lots of options.

Facebook (and one assumes Threads/Instagram) create ghost profiles of everyone mentioned or photographed in any posts on their platform if they can’t link that mined data to an actual account. So if your friends use the platform, then you do too, whether you know it or not.

This would be Facebook using your friends’ data. It happens to be about you, but it’s not yours.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t care about privacy or take actions to protect it, but I think it’s possible to go overboard in believing that nobody is allowed to know anything about you without your permission. There’s a lot of public information that’s available to anyone simply by being in public.

If you don’t want your friends telling people about you, that’s on you to tell your friends that. If your friends refuse to keep your existence secret then you’ll have to decide whether that’s more important to you than having friends.

LOL, it’s time to come up with fart jokes. Everyone should just communicate using fart jokes until meta bans fart jokes. Then just move on to the other words…tits, penis, butt, poop, toilet, etc etc.

I’m sure Facebook will go tits up! Specially if everyone’s tits are hard pressed on the issue. Yeah this is totally tits dude! Well tits my ass and call me honky! Tits the season to be weary fallalala la la la laaah!

It’s not private data if you publish it online.

They already had this data, I’m not sure why anyone cares about what they’re doing with it now. It’s not any worse than selling it outright.
