It has two "benefits" in this regard - 1) if you're always tired and fighting long COVID or other conditions (thanks to COVID's ability to damage the immune system), you won't have the energy to push back against authoritarianism, and 2) it helps foster division between people since the need to avoid getting sick will prompt some to avoid riskier situations (e.g. large social gatherings, etc.).
Also drives business for healthcare providers. Everyone wants long-term, desperate customers with no alternatives with inelastic demand(will pay anything). It's the entire US healthcare model.
