  • He got super close to asking that, and Lew’s answer was completely infuriating, as was every response he gave. But you’re right, I wish they would ask it outright.

Q: In the essay, you write a lot about the shared values of America and Israel. But today you have talked about pushing them to deliver aid, and you’ve talked about the fact that once Trump came into office and that push wasn’t there, the humanitarian situation got worse. Why was there a need to push so hard? Why do they need to be pushed to not ethnically cleanse Gaza? Why do they need to be pushed to have their military act in an honorable way? If they are our shared ally and our great friend, why aren’t they doing these things on their own?

A: The environment in October and November of 2023 was how do you sustain an enemy that just slaughtered twelve hundred of your citizens? You had to create a way for the aid to get in without it having the effect of making your enemy succeed. It is pretty unusual.

  • TLDR it’s because Netflix won’t agree to a 45 day minimum theatrical release. I’m all for direct to streaming (I haven’t been to a theater in years), but this seems like a fair way of dealing with Netflix. With all the associated costs, showing a movie in theaters for two days doesn’t make a ton of sense.

  • They really went hard on the normalization with this one. I gave up on NYT a long time ago, but I still manage to be appalled by their decision-making. I guess I still hold out hope that they’ll see the light and understand the harm they consistently cause, but they’ve had, what, more than a century to figure it out?

  • What? I’m all for better headlines and less bait-ey ledes, but the name of the show is in the lede and the first paragraph describes the plot.

The article is about a two minute teaser trailer, I’m not sure what more to expect.

  • Ahh thank you! Very good to know.

  • Primary him. It’s the only way to scare these power-hungry assholes into listening to their constituents. Imagine if Jeffries becomes speaker, he’d be even more beholden to the neoliberals and billionaires.

Fuck with the base (the base voted for Mamdani), and lose your seat. Actual real consequences are the only thing that matter these clowns.

  • Meanwhile, I got multiple mailers yesterday trying to convince me to vote against the CA redistricting plan. Hard to tell if they’re from the right or left, but it doesn’t really matter. These fuckers in Sacramento are doing everything they can to make sure we don’t win back the House.

  • Super curious if he actually laid a hand on the cops. “Allegedly assaulting officers” is like the first thing they go for against black men. The article says he punched a cop in the face twice, but that could very believably be a lie so they have something to charge him with, that’s what the cops do.

Regardless, this seems way blown out of proportion. I don’t really care if a cop gets punched in the face. Their job inherently carries physical risk. Unless there was permanent damage, this is overkill. I’m honestly amazed they didn’t shoot him, he’s lucky, and that’s fucked up.

  • Same. I’m enjoying his trolling, but knowing that it’s probably only in service of improving his image in order to force a presidential run down our throats, makes me enjoy it a lot less. Newsom is just not a genuine guy, he has always given me sleazy greasy politician vibes, and his governance hasn’t made up for it.

  • There was one in the town I grew up in, and I used to go and just browse for hours. I’d sometimes buy a few cheap little bits and bobs so I didn’t piss off the clerk.

Believe it or not, I used to go to RadioShack to check out the latest cell phone technology when phones were just starting to catch on. I distinctly remember marveling over this super super thin bar-style phone and being completely amazed they made it so thin. It was one of those candybar phones with a 1 inch dot matrix screen (and an extendable antenna, of course). And it was silver, which I remember thinking was awesome. They were still selling Motorola StarTacs, to give you a sense of the time, and I thought “wow, tech is going to get awesome if they can make something like this.”

  • I mean, damn. That’s one of the coolest movie posters I’ve seen in a long time.

  • The headline is a little misleading. Technically speaking, she is being illegally detained in the capitol building.

She refused to sign an agreement which would subject her to round the clock police surveillance and the constant threat of arrest. I wouldn’t call that a protest, I’d call that a conscientious personal decision. They won’t let her leave unless she signs, but there is no legal justification for her being told to sign. She hasn’t broken any laws and as such is being illegally detained where she is.

  • I need to vomit.

  • Fuck Melania, but also fuck Hunter. They both seriously suck. I have very little sympathy for either of them and the way they act in public.

  • It really says something about the quality of its world-building that I can glance at someone else’s screenshot and vividly remember riding over that specific bridge.

Such a good game. And I have nearly zero interest in westerns.

  • Yeah that’s well said.

  • While that’s gotta be a big part of it, I’m not sure that’s the true source of their hatred and bigotry, though it’s obviously not the same for every bigot. I think it boils down to an even simpler insecurity. Not necessarily an insecurity with their own gender, but more a feeling of jealous insecurity when they see people who genuinely know who they are and have put in the work to figure themselves out. Gender is just the easiest part of their identity to hate. I don’t think that insecurity is necessarily conscious, though the hatred certainly is, it’s more an enviousness of someone who is obviously secure with themselves and their body.

I had a similar reaction to the thumbnail. My first thought, before reading anything, was “huh, Meta found a lesbian who hates the rest of the LGBTQ community.”

  • Smotrich would be considered a terrorist pretty much anywhere else. He’s a huge bigoted piece of shit.

According to former Shin Bet deputy chief Yitzhak Ilan, who interrogated him at the time, during the protests against the Israeli disengagement from Gaza, Smotrich was arrested in 2005 while in possession of 700 litres of gasoline on suspicion of participating in an attempt to blow up Ayalon Highway, a major arterial road. He was held in jail for three weeks but not charged after refusing to speak. This account was corroborated by Dvir Kariv, who was an agent with Shin Bet at the time.

In 2006 he helped organize the "Beast Parade" as part of protests against a gay pride parade in Jerusalem, although he later admitted regret at the incident.

He is co-founder of the NGO Regavim, which monitors and pursues legal action in the Israeli court system against constructions undertaken by Palestinians, Bedouins, and other Arabs in Israel and the West Bank without Israeli permits.

  • Undoubtedly. I can’t think of a reason they wouldn’t start doing this immediately if this ridiculous deal somehow went through.
