  • You should check out Blades in dark and similar (Scum & Villany, Bands of blades). While it's not the same definition of 5th gen as the author (VTT integration isn't the point) it's modern RPG design, with a lot of thing to ease the GM life. And IMO the right balance between rule light and crunchy (it's definitely too crunchy/complex to be called rule light, but run quick and smooth) main features would be.

Everything has hit point aka clock, no matter whether we talk about opening a door, seducing a Noble or killing the dragon, the GM gives a target number and it's up to player to stack enough succesr to do-it. Of course fail roll would have narrative consequences

A downtime phase which is more than spend XP and heal, with a whole mechanic to manage faction to faction game.

A stress meta currency, which helps you a lot, until you don't have it anymore and start to struggle

Flashback and define equipment on the fly are things letting player jumping to action quickly without a long planning phase

IMO we're full into modern RPG design and used existing concepts to build a fast paced great game easy to play and GM while still having a lot of rules/options

  • @aihorde@lemmy.dbzer0.com draw for me At the top is written “Average D&D Party:” A stern warrior clad in iron armor, with a billowing red cape and a red cloth tied around his waist. His hands rest on the handle of a very wide sword, the tip of which stands on the ground in front of him. He is labeled “Warrior on a just and noble quest to defeat an existential threat to the world that they live in.” A girl with messy, blonde hair, and a bronze chestplate sewn directly onto her sleeveless shirt. She has a white ribbon tying a small messy ponytail at the back top of her hair, and is wearing tall boots with bronze arcs attached to the top of the foot parts. She is carrying a large bronze hammer, and a large bronze shield with a very upset-looking face engraved on it. She herself has an innocent expression. She is labeled “Idiot”. A woman clad in purple with a long-sleeved shirt with symmetrical holes on the arms and torso. She has pointed ears, like an elf, and is wearing gold earings and two gold necklaces. She also wears a dress that looks somewhat like a lamp cover with a spider-web pattern on it, and has a strap that wraps around her shoulder. She wears a placid, pretty expression, but behind her in low opacity is her face distorted with mischief and hate. She is labeled “Manipulator”. A small mage dressed in green with yellow details, and with a long, frilly mage hat featuring a poofy yellow flower on the forehead area. She also wears an equally frilly green cloak held together by a star shaped button, and golds a lightning bolt shaped spellcasting staff. She has an innocent expression, but sharp teeth and two side-ponytails peaking out from beneath her hat. She is labeled “Other, Smaller Idiot”.

  • It's crazy how much right wing became able to influence kids, and making nazi cool again. Because of course if a teen worries that your parent may be evicted or a young adult can't find a job, it's the fault of immigrants and feminist, not at all because of capitalism

  • That's a tricky question,

While I'd love to say no my character aren't related to me, and I try to change character type in reality things are more blurry. A different person playing the same character would play it quite differently, or may-be simply not finding that character cool. And there is some pattern in my character, I tend to play more anti-hero dragged into the adventure against their will or Techie/super-hacker profile, over some other archetype.

  • Plot twist, OP runs Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and soon will do a multi-ethnic World of darkness game with all of them at the same table

  • Cyberpunk games (including shadows in) quickly end up politics game when you mess with corpo, you make them angry, and need another corpo baking you

  • How easy it is for someone not knowing the game to build or even play a character? It's great to have thousands of option, except when you join a game, don't know yet all the option available and find up latter that your build doesn't work. Is it a risk in pathfinder, or are the options robust enough to neither close path early nor have necessary combo?

  • Aren't D&D like class the exception rather than the norm ?

  • I am not that much a D&D player, but doesn't it a huge power scale meaning that in the lower levels, it's fairly easy to design a you fucking loose encounter. And isn't there The Tarasque who is basically a you fucking loose statblock

I am all for a choose your fight approach where you should definitely not mess with someone bigger/stronger especiully without a plan or a lot of explosives. However, I expect that PC can make it out of an ordinary fight (just make sure it's not a target shooting practice and put 1-2 PC on the ground). Then if the 13th gen newborns vampire want to fight the 5th gen prince, not my problem if they have to burn their character sheet afterwards.

Finally, one of the best rpg out there is 10 candles where you know from scratch that everyone will die

  • The downside was so many six sided dice.

While indeed it can get pretty extreme, it's also so fun to roll handful of dices. This is one of the reason I find dice-pool fun (and not just better statistically speaking)

  • Is the fire that bad ? Or is it due to Marseille airport also being the base for fire-fighting plane ?

  • At least fading suns had something similar in the 90's with one action for free, 2actions with a - 4 and 3 actions a - 6(if my memory is right). The interesting part is that dodging would count as an action and you had to declare your intention at the start of the round.

  • Out of curiosity, what is the 3 action system?

I know FATE has 4 actions (overcome, attack, defend, create an advantage) so did PF merge attack and defend? Or is it a different choice?

  • We're RPG player, we have a long tradition of trolling each others, AD&D player will tell that Vampire is the opposite of a RPG while WOD player will reply that AD&D is a boardgames and that it misses the role play element to be called RPG.

But all this trolling tend to be all fun, and not many people would straight up refuse D&D game (even I, play it like once a decade, there is so many other game out there and so few time)

  • no shit sherlock

  • Overbook the session with like 5 players so even if 2 are missing, they're still 3.

Accept that character may disappear, sometimes you'll find role-play reason Being stuck with paperwork, family, duty sometimes you don't (But there is a kind of acceptance in not challenging why suddenly a PC disappeared in the middle of a dungeon when they're player isn't here)

  • The problem is more than just OSR, for some reason there is an expectation that NPC do not cure about living, and would fight no matter what.

Fleeing, surrendering, is what would happen if you want realistic fights.

In most games I play (but no OSR) I ask for an endurance (whatever how it's called) roll when PC or NPC took enough injuries to be in the malus, it makes sense to fall unconscious at a point, let the PC take prisoner, and act as a safety breaker to not kill a PC stupidly as they're unconscious long before dying

  • The working world is very different from the laid back, very slow moving world of Academia.

i wished that corporate was moving faster than academia, but its actually even slower and more conservative, spend 5 years getting a project to be finally put on the road-map, start working on-it for 2 years, get it descoped and postponed 2 years latter, then suddently have some manager panicking because we can't meet our contractual commitment This is what I've been telling for years and why I was hired, go for a quick and dirty plan-B to have some QA telling you they can't approve the release.

You can do a lot of critic to academia, but it's way faster and more efficient than private corporation

  • With an entrance exam, which involve a panel of judges and university professor, and the N best grades get the available positions. To limit corruption, at leas where I am, these exam are anomyzed (even one you take at university are), so the people doing the grading doesn't know who they grade, and only afterwards another person checks the name and the grade
