There are still things I use reddit for, but only because Google sucks so much now. Like if I’m looking for the best something to buy, I’ll add “reddit” at the end so I don’t get pages and pages of ads.
Otherwise, all my previously reddit-based entertainment comes from Lemmy, especially since all the activists seemed to have gone back. Lemmy is now fun again!
Yes, tape has very steep entry costs and requires maintenance and storage.
Most of the time it doesn’t make sense for a person to use it, but rather a corporate entity that needs to backup petabytes of data multiple times a day.
So tape doesn’t make sense for the typical person, unless you don’t have to buy the equipment and store i.
But, if you’re even a small company it becomes cheaper to use tape.
Companies don’t like deleting data. Ever. In fact some industries have laws that say they can’t delete data.
For example, the company I work in is small, but old. Our accounting department alone requires complex automated processes to do things each day that require data to be backed up.
From the beginning of time. I shit you not. There is no compression even.
And at the drop of a hat, the IT dept needs to be able to implement a backup from any time in the past. Although this almost never happens outside of the current pay cycle, they need to have the option available.
The best way they have to facilitate this (I hate it - like I said they’re old) is to simply write everything multiple times a night. And it’s everything since we started using digital storage. Yes, it’s overkill and makes no sense, but that’s the way it is for us. And that’s the way it is for a lot of companies.
So, when we’re talking about that amount of data, and tape having a storage cost advantage of 4:1 over disk, it more than pays for all the overhead for enterprise level backups.

Sean, I didn’t mean to offend you or insinuate that I didn’t like Barbie. I have a daughter, and watched it with her and watch the dreamhouse show with her on Netflix all the time. I actually really liked the movie - except the long boring parts where they tried to justify Barbie’s existence in our modern society.
Yes, those movies also have heavy product placements, but it doesn’t somehow excuse all other movies from having them, if that is your point.
My point is that piracy has already impacted our lives. The commercials in movies are the evidence. Further piracy will cause either more ads in media or less content that targets the demographic of people that pirate (ie 18-35 yo men probably).
Or they’ll start injecting ads directly into the media.
Oh wait, they’re already doing this. I forgot about the 45 minute Chevy ad in Barbie.
How can any Fediverse instance withstand that kind of force? Really the only way is to not save anything, or perhaps some sort of blockchain for all the comments and posts?

I was at an intersection once in a friend’s car. This was about 20 years ago: cell phones, esp ones that could take videos and pics, were not there yet.
Anyway, we were on the way home from work, just sitting there not saying anything. Then here comes this jeep, flipping through the intersection. Now, the intersection is big, like 4 lanes intersecting with 4 lanes, but not exactly at a square angle, and it must’ve been about 3/4 of a football field worth of length this jeep flipped.
The front end would hit the ground and then it would bounce up and roll in the air, then the ass end would hit the ground and so on. All the while it’s coming towards us slightly, but seemed to be drifting towards a gas station to our right. Now, this is in the middle of Rush Hour traffic, and somehow no one moved - everyone is just frozen, holding their breath, waiting to see if this jeep was going to careen into a gas pump and cause a huge explosion.
I’m not sure how many times it flipped, but it finally came to rest in a green patch of grass in front of the gas pumps right-side up, like some sort of insane Jeep ad.
The driver emerged - a young lady - she seemed to be ok, besides perhaps a little bewilderment and dizziness. She proceeded to just stand there staring at the jeep for a while. Then she looked around, as if to ask “Does anyone know if this is ok - what just happened?” I shrugged with my mouth agape, as if to respond, “I have no idea, and I’m a little freaked out.” Then our light turned green, and we drove away.
I have never seen anything like that in my life, and I still think back about it and try to figure out how the jeep got into that movement, and I just have no idea. It was all over in a blink of an eye. So bizarre.

So now I’m remembering I had something wrong with my foot, or some sort of swelling somewhere. And it did help relieve the pain, but personally I wouldn’t take it again for that because of the hangover.
Maybe, but ya know drugs affect everyone differently, and I can tell you it 100% felt like a hangover - like drinking, not like something I needed.

I used it for when I was sick. I got some flavored oil and put a few drops under my tongue occasionally.
Yes, it helped calm me down. But, I was hungover after I stopped taking it. But I get hangovers very easily because my liver has lived a few lives at this point - I was a bit of an alcoholist.
I use a bar of soap that is exclusive to me. I lather somewhere hairy, like my stomach, to build up some suds.Then, I soap everything with the suds and soap.
It wastes a ton of soap compared to a washcloth. And when I’m done I wash the bar off and wash my hands one last time. It’s the quickest way I have found to shower. I am usually out in about 15 minutes.
I don’t know, I know it works in a lot of places automatically, but I’m not sure how it works. Maybe if the thumbnail has some sort of pointer to the real image?

I’m running Docker in Windows and have a mounted drive. I code in VSC using that mounted folder / volume, and the page shows up on localhost. Just a few simple apps to convert fixed width to csv’s and back and gives analytics on the data using jStat and tables with dataTables. Nothing fancy, but I like it.
