  • I have the M3 and love it, but it’s not a particularly quiet mouse so may not be the biggest upgrade sound-wise

  • GenAI is short for generative AI in this context

  • A 3080 10gb is 69-71% the performance of a 9070 xt, so you’d see a pretty big jump in raw fps. For ray tracing, the 3080 is 60-76% the performance, so a similar increase there. It’s also worth keeping in mind these numbers are from the 9070xt launch, and other benchmarks have found the performance increased over time (nearly 10% iirc), so this is probably a lowball of the difference.

It’s also a much quieter card in general, though this depends a lot on the specific variant of each card you have.

I’m in the same boat with a 3080 10gb and I was really itching to snag one when the 9070xt first dropped, but personally I decided to be patient and wait for AMD’s next gen to grab an 80 class gpu (I run 4K so kinda need it).

  • afaik: short for janitor, and intended to be derogatory when used towards mods or admins.
I think it might have been popularized on 4chan? Idk that’s the context I’ve seen it in most and it fits their MO of shitting on people for working jobs or contributing to society at all.

Seems like a pretty shitty attempt at an insult imo tho, cuz a mod and a janitor basically do the same function (cleaning the shit so nobody else has to deal with it, ensuring the place is actually nice for users) and both are critical for public places but underappreciated/underpaid.

  • Proton’s a compatibility layer to translate between games that want to speak to windows and a Linux system. Steam downloads it for you if you turn it on as a setting, and most of the time you shouldn’t have to worry about it past that.

For pirated games: if you have the game as a folder with a game exe rather than an installer, you can still add it to steam pretty easily as a non-steam game and then just enable proton. If it has an installer this can still work, but it’s more of a pain cuz you have to add the installer to steam, run it with proton, and then switch the steam entry’s file location to the newly installed game. I honestly don’t recommend doing it that second way, I’m chronically allergic to bloat (arch btw) and even for me this is a dumb hacky work around.

  • Also I love the APU in an x870e board. It’s a shame there’s no B850e with pcie Gen. 5.

I hate to say this now long after the build is done, but 8000 series APUs usually downgrade gen 5 lanes to gen 4, so this actually doesn’t matter for the current chip at least. The x16 and 3 gen 5 m.2 slots all become gen 4 with an 8000 series apu in the board, sadly

  • I always feel like those are people that would’ve been speedrunners or avid soulslike players if they were born later

  • I use Mullvad, with my exit node in Canada

  • I use voyager and piefed.zip together (that’s what I’m posting from rn) and it’s been pretty solid so far - the occasional post doesn’t load an image or takes a while, but I see that on every instance I’ve tried on both voyager and the webui. That happens like one out of every twenty posts at most tho, so it doesn’t sound like what you’re seeing?

  • I watched someone vibe code a curl request with grok and it spat out an api key in the configuration completely unprompted. It wasn’t an active one unfortunately (that would’ve been so funny) but I could totally see this happening

  • I also really like Small Form Factor form factors

    (sorry couldn’t resist)

  • I’ve given up on running ASA using a 5900x and a 10gb 3080, cuz I can barely get a stable 40fps at 4K with clouds turned off and the settings as low as I can tolerate them (including upscaling turned on). If you’re playing at a lower resolution you’ll obviously have a much better time with it than I do, but fair warning this game is just unoptimized as fuck.

My performance is entirely gpu-bound, but that’s also what you’d expect at 4K so if you run 1080p for example a 5000-series cpu would probably give you a big jump in performance. A 5950x, 5900xt, 5900x, 5800xt, etc would be a really nice upgrade from your current cpu and with a bios update your board should support them all. If you’re able to find one, a 5800x3d or 5700x3d would be ideal if this is a purely gaming pc for you, though they’re not as powerful for productivity stuff.

The only other thing I’d check out is just to see if you have vsync enabled / a framerate cap, your gpu usage being low is probably just from the cpu bottleneck but those two things can also cause it

  • This is the one part I’m not clear on, are the filters different from just keyword filters? Will they work with content produced on lemmy/mastodon/etc? If they’re different from keyword filters, how will they be enforced cross-instance?

The other changes look really great and I really appreciate the devs putting in so much work and making so much progress - especially on feedback that they didn’t even get that long ago, for some of these features.

  • I never thought I’d say this, but in this one specific scenario I’m actually perfectly happy with him being alive too

  • Did you use a heavily quantized version? Those models are much smaller than the state of the art ones to begin with, and if you chop their weights from float16 to float2 or something it reduces their capabilities a lot more

  • Yep, the OpenAI api and/or the ollama one work for this no problem in most projects. You just give it the address and port you want to connect to, and that port can be localhost, lan, another server on another network, whatever.

  • Oof rip sorry lol, thought I’d seen a post about boost and piefed

  • I’ve seen a couple of other clients add support for piefed recently as well, although I don’t follow them closely cuz I’m happy with voyager. Maybe boost or mlem supports this with piefed already?

  • It’s come a long way recently, I’m currently using piefed on voyager rn and it works great
