Ardour is indeed pretty good. I’m a Reaper guy, which is incidentally available on Linux as well nowadays, so on the DAW and audio interface front, I’m all covered. If anything, my older 2i4 runs slightly more stable over Linux/Pipewire than it does on Windows with the official driver. I’m more on the composition/production side of things (amateur, although I do have a very small amount of professional experience), it’s mostly the amp sim and virtual instruments landscapes that left me on my appetite a bit last time I tried. There just weren’t many option and they all frankly sounded like crap. Maybe that got better since then, I don’t know hehe.

Huh. I’ve tried the Ardour and stuff way for a while. I’m curious what kind of stuff you’re producing. I tried for a while, but IME the good effects, and ESPECIALLY virtual instruments, were very few and far between. This and VR gaming are the two things I still have a Windows machine for.

I’m curious what made it that complicated. Was the Synology OS (DSM they call it right?) fighting you along every step or something? As far as I know it’s a custom Linux OS but I have no idea what it’s based on, or if it’s even based on a specific distribution… I could definitely see it being a challenge depending on the answers haha.

The code does look like code that counts Rs. The training data probably included tons of code that “counts character X in string Y”, so ChatGPT “knows” what code that counts characters in a string looks like. It similarly “knows” what a string looks like in the language, and what an application entry point looks like, etc. I’m not so familiar with C# that I’d know if it compiles or not. ChatGPT doesn’t either, but it has the advantage of having seen a whole freaking lot of C# code before.

LLMs don’t know if what they’re telling you is true or not, out of the box. It’s gonna give you an answer that statistically looks like a sequence of words that should come in response to the sequence of words (the prompt) you gave it. It doesn’t know what the words you said mean, and it doesn’t know what it answered means either. One of my favorite interactions I’ve had with Claude shows this limitation quite well…

Eh, I just generally avoid Nvidia on Linux hosts unless I specifically need it. Their driver situation is better than it was, but still sucks.

Pretty much the only thing I use Tailscale for is remotely SSHing from my phone to my home NAS, and they definitely don’t manage my keys. They do have a “Tailscale SSH” feature I don’t use…

If it wasn’t that it’s Nvidia and that you bought this specifically for Linux, I’d have told you to keep the Nvidia, as you did get a significantly better card for the price you paid.

I’ve had more luck with local facebook groups or word of mouth than the internet, for this stuff, in the recent years. This and some group chats are pretty much the only reasons I still have a Meta account…

Organized is a really big word to describe what essentially amounts to hiding shit out of my eyesight in some sort of organization I’ll forget the sense of in a matter of days, until I need it again and have to open all the bins to find everything again anyway. But like some other people here, I use hardware organizers for the small stuff like tools and brushes, and larger bins for things like my soldering gear, helping hands, etc.

Parsing absolutely comes with a lot more overhead. Especially since many websites integrate a lot of JS interactivity nowadays, you oftentimes don’t get the full contents you’re looking for straight out of the HTML you’re getting out of your HTTP request, depending on the site.
