  • That is why we shouldn't trust marketing.

  • the hardware is completely underpowered

It depends, compared with a gaming rig? Yes, it has been more powerful than a Nintendo Switch since ages ago and although this is not a biggest achievement, remember Switch 1 has a decent lineup almost since its conception (oh, and some even emulate Switch games there).

    the display is absolutely tiny

It depends on the phone model, I have been doing fine with my Poco F2 Pro with a 6,67 inches screen, destiny has taken me to a Samsung Galaxy S20 with 6,2 inches and I have been doing just fine, I still prefer the Poco as it didn't have any notch or camera hole whatsoever.

the display resolution is too high

Not sure if I am following this correctly, but AFAIK you can tweak that from settings or developer settings.

    the battery is tiny

For smaller devices yeah, it tends to be the norm, but batteries are becoming bigger, so I expect more 3D gaming time if games are optimized.

you're constantly taken out of the game by annoying interruptions

I mean, this is easily fixable with 3rd party or system inbuilt apps... Both of my devices have a gaming mode and it can enable do not disturb any time I open a game, now if you really can't allow to use that feature I understand, I could care less about somebody not been able to reach me by a phone call lol.

going in and out is a pain because the system will kill the app

This depends a lot of the phone, again, and that is correct for my case with the F2 Pro as it only had 6 GB of RAM, the S20 has 8 GB of RAM and I haven't noticed this in a while, and nowadays phones are been shipped with crazy amounts of RAM so yeah...

and worst of all, pretty much every mobile app I've ever seen, as well as the stores that provide them, are absolutely riddled with ads and microtransactions. Back in the day we had Angry Birds, and it was legitimately a fun, excellent, and simple game that I really enjoyed, but that game, and the entire industry as a whole, has been absolutely ruined by exploitation.

This is no secret for anyone, and this only happened because people allowed it and that's why mobile gaming is so popular, for good and bad reasons alike.

That's why in my previous comment I said some companies have been putting games for mobile with quality.

Is there another store that exists that isn't like that where you can find actually fun games to play?

Not sure if it counts as a store, but both Android and Apple offer a subscription tier model which let's you play lots of games without ads or dark patterns, there is also the Netflix subscription games which operate similarly...

Now talking about stores I heard there are some interesting games in Fdroid, and we now have the Epic Game Store, both on Android.

Like I said, I don't really game that much on the phone, but I keep good games in my radar from time to time, and we have some good ones like Balatro, Vampire Survivors, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, etc, I still prefer emulation on Android.

I hop in some Android subreddits on Reddit and you can get a lot of recommendations there (or ask here in Lemmy I guess), gaming on mobile shouldn't be just plain bad, we the users have the last decision whether or not engage with it, some decide no, and some decide to dive in a little just to see what they can find, but just going to the official stores will not help you as the games with the dark patterns proliferate there.

  • Not sure if you are really serious, AFAIK mobile gaming is like the one that takes the biggest slice of the cake.

Yes, not everyone will be playing Cyberpunk 2077 on their phones, but the gaming industry has adapted a lot of games to be played for mobiles.

And yes, the touchscreen argument is still strong, but this is easily fixable for me, and lots of people with a telescopic controller.

I am not even the most mobile gamer myself, (I don't play GaaS with it) I play a lot of more casual games there (touchscreen friendly games) but for emulation with a telescopic controller you are kinda in heaven.

No need to pay for extra hardware (aside the telescopic controller) because most of our phones are already powerful enough to support a good bunch of emulators, no need to un-dust my PS1 or PS2 just to get some retro gaming, and a very personal one: no need to fight with PSPs that die on me so I can finally finish Persona 3 Portable on the go with my own hardware this time (all PSPs I own end up dying if they are not used, mostly battery issues, but my 3000 unit died because the freaking CMOS battery and I can't fix it and don't trust repair men here).

On a second thought, this could be a personal or regional experience, for example, I am shocked people use SMS on a phone in 2025 lol, where I live it is WhatsApp (or meta apps) or nothing, not even iMessage is used among iPhone users generally, the only use we have for SMS are confirmation messages and such, nobody knows what RCS is, and just thinking about SMS takes you back to early 2000s lol.

  • If only the Pixel was shipped with a Snapdragon processor I'd consider it as my next phone, I like gaming without generating unnecessary heat, and also emulation over all.

  • they're shutting down all the streaming sites

This is the biggest lie I'll read today... Possibly.

  • FIFA 20? lol.

  • I am patiently waiting until somebody manages to crack the GCN app package to work with the Switch 1 so I can use it on my hacked and overclocked one 🙃

  • I didn't know about this game, but honestly it is so good that others experience the same as I, of course I don't think that I am the only one in the world that Chrono Trigger is not for him (not even sure about this myself), but definitely is so scarce to read comments of people struggling with the title compared with praises for it gets!

  • after being living in the map marker era for so long.

    Jeez, this is totally it!

Thanks for putting it in simpler words for me 😅

Definitely gonna check in taking notes.

    1. Jump Ultimate Stars, this is the dream game for any Otaku, the fact that we can still play it in 2025 thanks to custom servers is a blessing.
    2. God Of War 2018, I was having a bad streak gaming related due to personal and work life, but when this game was released I got it immediately, something that I rarely do (patient gamer gang), anyway, this game kept me awake late nights, I know this is not something that one should brag about, but I was enjoying it completely thus the nights felt that happened too quickly.
    3. Toy Story 2, this game will never age for me, I honestly don't know if it should deserve this spot, but if there is a game that I have replayed the most in my life, this would be it, the platform mechanics and graphics are top notch for me (and hey, PS1 graphics are making a comeback, so no shame at all with that style).

Maybe another game deserves that last spot, but those 3 games were the 1st ones that came to my mind.

    Honorable mentions:

    Mario Kart DS

    Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy

Hotel Dusk & The Last Window (can you guess my favorite console by this point?)

    Pokémon Soul Silver

    TWEWY

    Time Hollow

All the other God of War games (even Ascension)

    Batman Arkham saga (even Origins)

    The Witcher 3

    Xenoblade

And a bunch others that would make this list absurdly big, which is not the main point of this post.

    1. Chrono Trigger is at the way top. The greatest game of all time hasn’t been bested in 30 years. Telling the best narrative I’ve heard in my life, and packing it into 20 short hours, with timeless art and amazing music, and into FOUR GODDAMN MEGABYTES, this is one many try to beat, and none have succeeded. Not even Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

I would lose the count of how many times I have read praises (well deserved) for Chrono Trigger, and it only makes me feel bad with myself because I left it unfinished (I am close to the 1st ending... I think) because I was lost all the damn time and needed a guide to move forward, something that I really don't enjoy, and I didn't have too many gaps while playing it to be fair.

I enjoy RPGs and jRPGs, even when they are not my favorite genres, but I don't like to feel lost all the time.

Now, it should be obvious that I didn't play this game back in its day, my last game session was about a year ago in my DSi XL (arguably the best way to experience it) so I have 0 nostalgia googles about it, although I am a Toriyama fan and I loved the art style, graphics and music, it is only the pace and the narrative that didn't caught me completely...

I know I shouldn't force myself to finish it as gaming is a hobby after all, but damn, I really want to complete it, at least one playthrough lol (I don't like to leave stuff unfinished).

If anyone has tips to not feel lost all the damn time (aside of not stop playing for a brief time) I am all ears.

  • Probably he is a Nintendo hater /j (but not entirely, it happens).

  • Maybe the Deck 2 could though.

This comes from a person that hasn't been able to get one officially as Valve doesn't sell it in Mexico officially... But hey, our USA neighbors get it at a fair price!

Maybe Nintendo doesn't have fair prices here either, but at least I can grab it in a local store any time.

  • Yeah no, I have seen multiple businesses closing down due to poor marketing promotion/budget.

And then we all complain that we didn't know about a certain product/service because they didn't market it good enough (we have seen it a lot of times with movies for example, then they turn into obscure classics with the pass of time, but not really profitable), also some games that didn't really made themselves known while in critical selling weeks?

Who is gonna be the brave soul to release a game when GTA VI appears? That would be marketing suicide, no matter how good your game is.

  • Yeah that works too.

Honestly, BOTW in the Switch 2 compared to how I tweaked it in my modded V1 one doesnt looks like a huge difference to me 😅 (colour corrected to make it seem more like an OLED display and overclocked the unit to get close to 60 FPS in most scenarios).

  • I thought those fan bases landed on different media 😅

  • Yeah, it might look similar, but feature and gameplay wise would be lacking think of the enhanced games for the New Nintendo 3DS for example, some games worked in the older system... But experience was subpar.

  • Ah, here we are again at the stage of hating the company that makes the games but loving the games it makes...

Just curious, any other companies that ring that bell?

  • Is there a remind me bot for Lemmy?
