One of the problems with the fediverse is that each server keeps its own copy of the content. It is definitely a worry that bad actors push content to federated servers to get them taken down due to the content they now are storing.
Hi! I’m Lohrun, I run the Kbin instance on fediverse.boo
Consider buying me a coffee to help keep the lights on in the server room! https://bmc.link/lohrun

I think that’s the nicest way someone has ever said “touch grass” lol. I will agree though, losing access to Reddit made me realize how much mindless scrolling I would do on there. It’s difficult to see all of our comfy corners of the web crumble around us and not know what to do about it
I’ve tried Voyager and Memmy… I also know there are like a dozen others. My point still stands, we have too many devs spread out trying to make their own app/UI instead of us coming together to make one or two really good ones
I do too, ever since losing Apollo I’ve struggled to find something to fill that void. Ive tried various social media sites over the last couple of months but nothing has really stuck. Honestly not sure what to do or try at this point
I notice myself checking it less and less due to the post sorting algorithm being infuriating. E.g. I’m sorting by “Top 6 Hours” and this post from 7 months ago is in my feed
Edit: and since I’ve now commented on this post, it’ll likely bubble into other people’s feeds and they’ll be just as confused as I was
Hot take but all of the Lemmy/kbin apps. Instead of focusing dev time and resources on one or two open source apps we instead have a dozen half-baked pre-alpha apps. Lately it seems like I can’t go a day without seeing a post for a new Lemmy UI.
Seeing how we’ve known about it for decades and this is the amount of progress we’ve made towards slowing/fixing it… idk maybe I’m just being cynical, then again Covid really showed us just how much the general public doesn’t care about their well-being and other’s wellbeing
Or create more comment and repost bots to dilute the content even further, sure initially it’ll look like increased real engagement but it would drive more power users and content creators away
I really appreciate the links! So it looks like matrix has mainly been focused on the chat room side of things and another downside is that you need some sort of translation layer to connect a matrix thing to an activity pub thing. Definitely gives a lot to think about. I’ve been trying to decide where I should donate my time to doing dev work at but the answer appears to be “it’s complicated”
It’s hard to make anything “official” on the fediverse as things are distributed. Who makes the “official” determination for Lemmy? The biggest instances? The devs? Do we hold a vote across instances?
Do you know of any forum-like websites that use the matrix protocol?
We need a better way to advertise what servers to direct people to. Would be nice to circle through a big list of instances to evenly direct new users to
It’s less sketchy if you pay for a domain through a reputable registrar
Does nebula have enough content to be worth it now? I haven’t heard anyone with a sponsor spot for nebula in a few years now
Oof best of luck to you guys on .ml instances, might be worth looking at buying a domain as a backup to migrate to. Don’t wanna be caught off guard like this especially if they are trying to recoup all their urls. I went with a .boo domain to be unique for my instance but there are loads of TLDs out there
I already pay for YouTube premium but that doesn’t change how creators make content. The YouTube algorithm and its mystery has really changed how people make content over the years. There have been people I’ve watched for 10+ years now and it’s sucks to see them have to chase the algorithm to maintain their livelihood. If I could pay a creator directly to get more content, I gladly would
At this point I’m down with paying a monthly subscription to a creator for content. I’ve never signed up for any creator’s pattern or anything because how the system is currently set up. I know some creators switched to posting less frequently because their more frequent posting appeared to be hurting their view count due to YouTube’s algorithm. I am so willing to pay a creator directly for them to go back to making more frequent content (and content they actually enjoy and not stuff just for views)
as if the real working class (employees of supermarkets, fast food chains, gas stations, etc)
White collar and blue collar workers are also part of the real working class. The bottom like 95% of earners are. We need to stop labeling ourselves as different groups and start working together. Doesn’t matter the type of job you have, more than likely you are being severely underpaid and under appreciated.
Change doesn’t have to be slow and we don’t need to make more excuses for the people able to make the change. Protests outside of the US have shown how to accelerate change in the direction they want. At this point though, it appears that a lot of people have given up hope that anything will change
