  • Colbert lost 10% of his audience in Q1 2024, so losses were mounting. There is less of a business case for late night.

CBS didn’t fire Colbert this year either. They decided not to renew his contract, which ends at the end the 2025/6 season. If they’d fired him, there would likely be large penalty clauses involved. What they did do earlier was decide not to fill the post-Colbert slot when their previous show ended, signalling a general move away from late-night.

  • Still can’t play the new Lorde album though.

  • Heroes did not continue during the writers strike. To accommodate the reduced episode order to allow the season to be completed before the strike, major rewrites were made very quickly and 2/3 of the season was pushed back a year.

  • None of that resulted in the overthrow of any government. Electoral reform was carried out by the government, and the Suffragette militant campaign ended in failure in 1914, having turned public opinion against women voting. Their impact is very much overstated - the height of their arson and bombing campaign was also the period with the fewest insurance claims as a nation in living memory.

  • As it suggests, the Ukrainian Maidan was, well, in Ukraine.

  • It’s a cancellation bump. It happens a lot and was expected. However the show has been haemorrhaging viewers the past few seasons, and now loses around $40m a year. It has been the highest rated late night show on TV, but has failed to cut through on YouTube, which is where the ad money is slowly shifting.

I’m not sure any network that doesn’t already have one has any intention of entering the late night space. It’s time is over.

He’ll make a fortune on a premium podcast deal though.

  • Sour taste? Good to see you don’t have any real problems. Expect this more. As streaming looks to advertising to make a profit, platforms will want to own the conversation with a show for more than a week per season. It’s also preferred by most creatives, and allows for real-world conversation with everyone synced in more manageable chunks.
