  • Fair enough, I would also prefer if they pushed out an online excel/power point alternative before this or or allowed for more cloud storage.

    That being said, I also don't think this is a bad thing to do. It seems to work alright so if they can at least be at that level then that's fantastic. I do wish they pooled their resources with other open source AI models cause that would be more efficient but maybe they have a good reason. I've just not looked into it cause I don't use AI that often

  • Imo, having Proton just copy Google but actually be private is exactly what I want. Of course, if they stray away from privacy then there will be issues. I also feel like they are making good stuff. As a subscriber myself I don't have many issues with their offering other than the stuff they don't provide but Google does.

  • Not sure what market your in but in Europe the price gap is not that huge, 30% max far as I can tell. Obviously that's still quite a bit when we are talking about car money but 20 vs 60 as you mention is not realistic as long as your not comparing the byd dolfin to a Mercedes.

    I also never mentioned Chinese cars are poor quality. Actually they seem like quite good quality and as others have said their software seems good too though I've never driven one so I don't know. The current automakers, whilst they have the build quality sorted, the software and a few is lacking

    One suggestion no one seems to suggest is to buy a second hand car. Imo, you get much more value for your money and since the car is already made you help the environment out too by not consuming something that needed to be made just for you

  • Aquire, own, however you want to describe gaining a car in this alternative system. The point is, getting a product that is able to be acquired for an unfair price due to the CCP propping up and protecting their own companies would still be unfair.

    I agree with your want for having everyone be more cooperative. The Chinese started by being quite cooperative in building cars with western companies. I used to think that was good but now that CCP has turned it around and doesn't want to share any of their developed tech with other players, I think western business greed got the better of us. I'm not as pesemistic as others that the west is very far behind. European brands do make some killer electric cars but they may not have quite the range or quite the low price and they have not been on the market for that long.

    Finally, I'm not trying to make bad faith arguments. I just disagree with your position that I'll buy a dumped Chinese car because fuck the current players for not innovating. That is how I understand your position anyway, if that's not right please explain the neuance I'm missing rather than attacking me

    Whilst I agree the system is broken, buying dumped goods only makes the situation worse as it means those players and playing on an uneven playing field

  • The interconnection between the modes of transport is another great point. At least starting with having train transfers be more coordinated (since they wouldn't be run by different companies) is a good start.

    Unsure how coordinating all the different privat bus networks would go but definitely something the government should prioritise too. If the system can actually work then hopefully that means we can get people out of cars.

  • I like nationalisation as a concept. I don't like that currently it is still a concept as Labor has not made clear, concrete commitments for what it could mean.

    I understand that ticket prices are unlikely to come down. It sucks but I hope they can at least commit to freezing prices for a while or something. I think nationalisation offers the opportunity to rework the ticketing system as a whole to have it be completely integrated. I hope this would mean you can just tap in and out of stations and have the lowest price automatically calculated like they are in some European countries (the Netherlands for example).

    Unfortunately Labour hasn't said anything clear about their plans other than "we want to make it better". Hopefully we find out more in the Autumn.

  • But Trump was the first president (since the US tried to break up Microsoft) to seriously start thinking about fighting big tech. Obviously for dumb reasons (they hurt his feelings) but still, I don't think that statement is inaccurate. However, it is true he isn't the first politician to say something against big tech. Even so, he was in a position of power to potentially do something about it (even if he never did and likely won't now given how much they are bending the knee)

  • Regardless of what we think of his comments, it's good that he is vocal about his opinions. Makes him seem like a person than some faceless CEO they says nothing.

    He just got spicy with this 1 post and it hasn't worked out for him and now the open source community Proton is a part of hate him. There is so much hate that they are leaving Mastodon which is a huge shame

  • So it's naive to voice his opinion on what a Trump presidency could mean for the tech industry? Looking back to trump's previous term big tech shunned him and Twitter even kicked him off the platform by the end of his presidency. Back then it pissed Trump off and he threatened all sorts of shit. I don't think it was that crazy to think that he would still be upset about it and try to do something at the begining of December when Proton's CEO made that post.

    If you look at what proton is trying to do in terms of becoming a complete non-proffit that would have many safeguards in place to undo that change. I think it does show he has some level of forethought. The one caveat being that they have not completed that process and implemented everything yet so we'll have to see if that promise follows through

    Great pick by @realDonaldTrump. 10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned. People forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin.

    He is supporting Trump's pick for a roll, fair enough. But the rest of the post, he is talking about how he hopes the republicans will do something about big tech. He isn't endorsing Trump himself or his stance of policies. Far as I've seen he never has. He it literally just stating what the republicans used to be about.

  • From a historical perspective, he wasn't wrong. The republicans were looking more at big tech cause, in the past, big tech was very left leaning. Things have obviously changed but your quote misses that he was hopeful that Trump would do something for big tech. His hope is obviously miss placed after big tech started sicking his dick but doesn't mean he couldn't be hopeful
