Sony could do wonders with these phones, if only they would market them properly. And yet…
You mean, price them properly. What Sony wants for the 5 V is Galaxy S23 Ultra territory.
Edit: Just checked the prices in my territory, I can get the S23 Ultra with change to spare, like, I can get a cheap tablet with the leftover.
Premium pricing proved to be profitable for Sony’s mobile division especially with the fierce competition in the market. I hope they would at least extend software support to support the inflated price as other companies are offering 4-5 years of updates at this point.
Samsung prices are insane.
Sony prices make Samsung prices seem reasonable.
They are all fucked up.
Samsung prices are high in the USA, I agree. Outside of there they can be pretty decent.
They aren’t really very special phones. Pretty average tbh with a below average flash light (it’s basically useless) and terrible fingerprint reader. I only got an xperia because it doesn’t have a punch-hole or notch.
I use my smartphone only as a flashlight, so that’s good information to have.
Not sure why you’re being down voted tbh. I had a chance to fiddle around with the 1 IV when Sony sent me the wrong phone by mistake with my online store order.
I have no idea why they are priced as high as they are either. I was not impressed by it at all.
I guess some people don’t want to hear the truth after spending so much money on one of these.
As a massively disappointed xperia 1 iii owner I can say good ridance. Great hardware with dogshit software that literally kills said hardware. Backlight inconsistencies, fp scanner inconsistencies, dead fp scanner, random warnings about water in charging port when phone is sitting on a table, massive delays waking up if screen was locked with maps, camera or some other heavy app running, clueless support, shit battery reporting, no way to take quality video quickly, no way to take any video quickly, 60MB updates taking half an hour to install, phone being useless for 2-3 minutes after a reboot, phone being useless for ~5 minutes after an update an reboot, etc.
TL;DR: never buying a sony phone ever again. A grand for this piece of shit! Ridiculous.
Interesting. I’ve got a 1 III that I pre-ordered from the first batch. The only issue I’ve had is that the fingerprint scanner totally stopped working at this point, but I haven’t found any indication it’s software over the thing physically failing. Was damn near perfect before that, in my experience anyway.
I have had zero hardware failure on any of my phones until sony. None. Ever.
Lucky.
I had a Nexus 6P that’d power down at 70% battery remaining, a Note 4 that stopped accepting input from the (undamaged as far as I could tell) screen, two other Samsungs with unreliable fingerprint readers, one of those also had a camera that stopped autofocusing and basically became useless. The Samsungs also had a myriad of charger issues from the phantom water detection to one that started getting super hot and melted a USB cable and nearly caught fire while mounted in my car.
My god, I loved my 6P but the battery issues were shocking.
By the end, my 6P was dying at 60% or whenever the temperature dropped below ~12 degrees. Which in the north of the UK is most of the time
I also had a OnePlus that developed a fault where the fingerprint sensor would burn me. It took me taking OnePlus to court (and winning) before getting my money back. Scummy company.
And a Galaxy note where the earpiece speaker stopped working and I had to have all my calls on the loudspeaker
The worst part of the 6P battery stuff was how shitty Google/Fi support handled it. There was a class action lawsuit, and I just needed to show records of my replacement (and then replacement of my replacement) for that issue. They straight up lied to me in chat about having never contacted support about the issue. I had an interaction that was literally:
You can confirm this is my third Nexus 6P, yes?
Yes.
You can confirm they all came directly from you?
Yes.
You can confirm I only purchased the first one?
Yes.
Why did you send me a second and third phone?
We do not have record of this.
Fortunately, I still had the phone and recorded a video of the phone powering itself off at 65% and was able to provide that as evidence…but I’m still salty about it all. It’s why I have not and will not own a Pixel or use Fi ever again.
My 1V is a solid improvement over the 1III, a lot of small issues have been fixed (although I’m still missing a lot of customization options from Samsung phones)
I’m just not willing to be an alpha tester for them for that money.
Anecdotally, I had good experiences with my Xperia Z3 and Z5 compact phones. They were the only small form-factor phones with waterproofing I could find at the time, the cameras had high frame rates for slow motion, and weren’t painfully difficult to root and get rid of some UI annoyances.
The hardware is great, though. Have you tried installing LineageOS on your phone? I’m guessing a lot of your issues would disappear
I haven’t as, for the first time in my life, I have an actual use for a camera. I don’t want to lose it.
MKBHD’s yearly video lamenting Xperia Phones are my only reminder that Sony still makes phones.
My first smartphone was an Xperia, so I still have a soft spot for them. But it’s unlikely for them thrive in this market with cutthroat margins.
Xperia 5 5?
Yes arabic for model line roman for generation of the model
Sony’s naming conventions are insane.
Overheating garbage anyway
