OP could mean whenever they want. Most people understood what OP meant. I was just making a point that data is often an overlooked currency.
Also aren’t you also being pedant by explaining OP didn’t use the correct vernacular?

Yes, they meant “Twitter is putting up barriers to browsing content.” Even if paywall wasn’t the right word, their intent was clear. Not sure why we feel the need to dive into whether they used the right word when the issue is Twitter (and Meta) attempting to seal off their users’ content behind a login. Most everyone seems to have understood them.

Did you misunderstand what they meant in the context of the post? No? Then there was no reason to have a multi-day meltdown because OP misunderstood what a word meant.

Who’s really “being a shit” here? I see nobody else being hostile but you.

Nobody else is picking apart silly things like wording and terminology and being hostile and confrontational. Just you.

What’s the matter, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and decide to take it out on the world?

Can we please leave this kind of toxic confrontational behaviour on the dead bird site and reddit where it belongs? We don’t need it here.

“silly things like wording and terminology”

Funny how those things are so vitally important in any other context. How about we just call everyone who isn’t heterosexual “gay,” does that sound alright to you? No need to get bogged down with silly things like wording and terminology, right? Who cares about accurate terms for things, any old word’ll do!

I don’t give a shit if you approve of my vocabulary. I didn’t even say anything to you, you came at me. I’m not here for you. I’m a grown ass man, I can say “fuck” if I want and I do not have to sit here and be scolded by you, so I won’t. Piss off.

For what it’s worth, I agree with you @assbutt.

People who think paywall is synonymous with sign-in or account required probably spell “should have” with an “of.”

              See, now that’s just classy.

“Should of,” by contrast, both looks like (as in the visual appearance of the words together) and sounds like a smooth-brained concoction.

Quotes are often used around a word when it’s similar enough to another word to be understood.

Paywalled means you must have an account and pay in order to view an article.

There is no equivalent word that comes to mind for this, but “paywalled” is so close as to be misunderstood only if you’re trying to do so – you must now have an account and login in order to view what’s behind the login wall.

No, it is not close. The meaning is not similar. Either a site charges you money for access or it doesn’t. Twitter doesn’t. So don’t fucking say that it does, eh? What’s so difficult about that? What reason is there to say something is paywalled if it isn’t paywalled, except to stir the pot?

As I said originally, when legitimate media outlets publish misleading, sensational, or otherwise bullshit headlines, people are pissed. Why then is it suddenly a non-issue now? Why is it acceptable to mislead people if you’re just another kbin user when it’s such a mortal fucking sin otherwise? Saying that Twitter is paywalled is not ambiguity, it is misinformation. That’s because Twitter isn’t paywalled.

The good ol’ loginwall that social media sites have been moving to for a few years. Meta is also guilty of this… making it almost impossible to check out anything without a login.

Just a reminder that nitter exists, which lets you browse twitter without needing an account, from a minimal ui and having everything proxied through the instance of choice for privacy. You can use the libredirect firefox addon to automatically redirect twitter (& optionally other services like youtube/reddit, etc to its frontend like nitter).

You can view a list of instances here.

edit: … wow it looks like nitter’s also affected by the account requirement, it stopped working, rip…

Works now, though I don’t know what nitter.net’s method of obtaining Tweet data is, and wouldn’t be terribly surprised if Twitter intends to crack down on that, sooner or later.

I’d personally use a different instance rather than nitter.net btw, as the official ones gonna be slow due to everyone using it

wouldn’t be terribly surprised if Twitter intends to crack down on that, sooner or later

im surprised they haven’t implemented some sort of ip based rate limiting already, nitters been going on for years

This shouldn’t even be a question. IT IS CONTROLLED BY MICROSOFT

it is a tool that they are using to embrace, extend, extinguish the free software movement, something they’ve been doing for more than a few decades now.

it is a tool that they are using to embrace, extend, extinguish the free software movement

Github doesn’t care about the content posted on there until they get a dmca to take it down, or if the content’s illegal, in which case any large company would’ve done the same. If you’ve got a specific example of censorship, which wasn’t justifiably removed, feel free to share.

Heck, i saw a popular github repo containing an activation script for windows a while back, and it looks like its still up. It has almost 37k stars… Which literally proves microsoft doesn’t give a damn.

Now on the contrary, i absolutely hate things like codeberg, gitlab, sr.ht, sourceforge and the 2 trillion selfhosted gitlab instances to exist. I want to contribute to software or quickly report an issue? screw having to signup to a trillion services, and then waiting for my account to be accepted, because people can’t decide on one platform to share code. It disincentivizes collaboration if anything. Github’s already got a massive userbase, just stick with github, there’s nothing wrong with it.

It’s frustrating, but I’m betting it won’t last. With all the people who only visit twitter via links from other sites (or those embedded tweets in news articles), doing something like this will cause twitter’s page traffic to suddenly implode. Which will cause their advertisement impression statistics to implode. Which will make their paying advertisers explode. And then twitter will roll it back.

Unless, of course, Elongated Muskrat is intentionally and purposefully trying to completely remove twitter from existence. In which case, this is a pretty clever move.

trying to completely remove twitter from existence

I expect that Twitter just wants people to install the Twitter app and get Twitter accounts.

I suppose that Reddit could do the same thing as well.

If you browse Twitter without an account you’re probably not part of the problem.
A friend ran in to this today when trying to check if a service provider was having technical issues.

I’m now expecting Elon Jr. (Spaz) to do the same on Reddit because Elon is his idol and mentor.

I wish there was an option on #DuckDuckGo to exclude search results that point to Twitter since I can no longer read them. It’s now just clutter in the search results.

@stux As I said on Mastodon: it probably is another “bug” that plagues Twitter since… “this guy” put his hands on it. It could be fixed soon because of the ruckus it will certainly make.

For now, you can still use Nitter instead.
