If I recall correctly, the Israelites fled slavery in Egypt and God commanded them to eradicate the inhabitants of Canaan, The Promised Land. There are whole books dedicated to successful military generals like Joshua. I’m not familiar with Jewish texts, though, just what I remember learning in Baptist churches as a kid.
I vaguely recall watching a documentary once where it was theorized that the various names for God in the bible actually referred to different gods originally which would explain some of the inconsistent behaviours and lessons, if one was a war god and one was more merciful.
