Movie review: Escape | easternkicks.com

Adachi Masao 足立正生 got his start in 'pink film' (softcore erotica) in the 1960s, got political and went to the Middle East to make Red Army–PFLP–Declaration of World War (1971) and spent almost three decades in Beirut as the spokesman for the Japanese Red Army there and assisting the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), until deported in 2000 and serving two years in a Japanese prison.

Eastern Kicks has an in-depth article about Adachi and his latest film, exploring left-wing terrorism of the 1970s

The Bad Boy Old Man of Japanese Cinema is back with all eyes on the nation’s Most Wanted Terrorist in a fiery biopic…

Outside of more hardened Japanese film fans, perhaps most have never heard of Masao Adachi — the most prolific multi-hyphenate director/writer/actor/critic in pink/political cinema of the 60s-70s period — but most are familiar with his longtime collaborators and cinematic partners in crime: Kōji Wakamatsu and to a lesser extent, Nagisa Oshima. While Wakamatsu would basically become the global face of underground Japanese cinema and rebellion through film personified, Adachi wasn’t content for long to just talk the talk or even films the films.
