you can force a lot of options still when you upload a video OR provide a link. Plenty do that. For example in the tags add yt:cc=on will force on captions when you play a video
Also I have to say that the whole idea of truenas is moving towards enterprise even if you self-host it. They'd much rather you bought a whole system than on your cobbled together old stuff. That's why it is now community edition, a simple way of saying you are gonna get bugs and things that don't work
Oh and as if by magic, after I said something I received an email from a client bemoaning about the drop in youtube viewers. She reckons it is not only a drop in viewers but in viewing time as well. Mentioned bloody AI as well just because everybody is
I get that - it is never going to replace a true docker setup. However I am pretty happy with what I can achieve on my personal truenas setup, and it is NOT exposed to the web which appears to be perfectly fine.
Youtube has seen exactly the same slowdown as everything on the internet. Plenty of people have less time to spend watching videos and being more worried about money (lack of it) whilst also spending more time on other things.i cannot blame one single thing but I have noticed that the complaints about AI being literally everywhere are at the foreground when people moan to me!
There are quite a few that allow uploads without charges or subs. But not if you start now, right now because costs have risen so much you cannot possibly cover them if someone comes in and uploads 20 or so high quality high bandwidth sucking videos because well, there isnt really the audience and the money is basically lost... and as said that is where we are. Doesn't help they only really use h.264 and don't get ad revenue. Creators have zero interest in making a video if they don't get something back, either in plenty of views or some income which currently, to be brutal, they have zero chance of achieving on peertube compared to youtube
Nextcloud is pushed as an easy to use docker setup these days, heck most people I know who "use" it don't do much with it at all so what database it is using is gonna be way back in their list of priorities... \
Plus the users outweigh the admins surely (as in those that just install then forget)
Wordpress, as mentioned, should cover you for most things, but you have to realise that Wordpress is getting more and more commercialised every day and cheap hosting is probably worse than a bad wordpress site. You can search for free plugins and theme inside wordpress for example, but if you really want to go white label then you will need to look at your own themes or modifying one to suit
If you go down that route then look at zfs which will allow you some redundancy (like raid) raidz1 can tolerate 1 drive dying and radz2 can tolerate 2, but obviously it is not 100% though I have never had a drive failure corrupt a zfs pool in like 10 years, and replacing a drive is easy. This question has, I'm afraid, many answers. zfs on a 3 drive system would run nicely though, and zfs is supported by Ubuntu. But of course we are talking different ways to do things, and this is part of the fun of self hosting!
I agree but I do have to say that Yunohost is becoming bloated. Successive versions run way slower than they used to - I know it is part of the security and ease of use but it is becoming noticeable. You can also use some docker things in yunohost but for an absolute beginner Yunohost is by far the best way to do it.
RK3588 consumes less at idle and full power. I said more power hungry and it is exactly that. The n100/150 can be twice as power hungry when on load, you can spin anything if you want but they consume a lot more. Add in extras and it can add up to quite a lot more hungry, I have seen certain n150 setups use 4 times a similar setup on an RK3588 board for example - that is a significant difference
Pretty sure you'd be better of with a tunnel like Cloudflare Tunnels, Tailscale, or something similar. They couldn't care less if your ip address changes. Of course Cloudflare is a big corp and doesn't fit your bill but it's the idea I mean not the corp and it is probably the most well known
You'd be miles better off with a mini pc with an intel processor than an RK3588 SoC. Drivers are sketchy at best whilst an N100 or similar will just work, plus they will easily take an ssd and other hardware much easier. Yes more power hungry but way easier to work with unless you want to tear your hair out with silly things. OrangePi are decent boards, for example, but they are way behind even a Pi for software support. If you must go ARM I wouldn't look past a Pi5, a decent one with a HAT for nvme/m.2 should do the job
Can't charge at home here and no public chargers nearby either...
I'm guessing you are in the US as here in the UK more are against EVs than for them because charging costs out and about are higher than ICE cars and Teslas are pretty much hated, and they have by far and away the best charging network. My wife is disabled and believe me having an EV is way harder then because even silly things like the public chargers being as far away from service stations and amenities means it is counter-productive. We will never be able to charge at our current home either - it is banned in the contract
Oh it just doesn't like it as much as SMB... has work mandated VPN on it for starters! I use a truenas box for most of the backups etc. and I just share the same dataset via SMB and NFS and locally only, so it is sorted, but NFS on the Win 11 box is just way flakier and drops often
I still have to use SAMBA as Win 11 hates NFS with a passion and we have Win 11 boxes here supplied as work machines so no changing. Also wifeys gaming rig is Windows as she don't want to mess around getting stuff to work... \
But hey - for everything else it is NFS with all of its weirdness, but it just works a bit better than SMB
