  • I guess I'm not that into that so wouldn't find something to interest me on youtube. I probably don't bother watching 99% of my feed, and just use YouTube when I need to reference something these days.

Like finding out a location from a video game or looking up a recipe to cook. I don't find myself liking majority of the "big YouTube as a job" type channels, and videos I tend to view when searching has been more "this is my only upload because it seemed interesting" type videos.

  • 10 hour long videos!? What the hell. What can be that interesting for 10 hours from YouTube? Is it actual full written tv shows or documentary tv series?

  • I've wondered who had the attention span for hour long videos on youtube or even 10 minute long ones once the algorithm started prioritizing those over short form. Most youtubers just aren't that good enough to be able to deliver something compelling for a long length of time, which was why short and to the point videos is what I miss about old YouTube.

  • Season 3 was impressive in how there were only 8 episodes that took 2 years to come out but the writing felt like it ran out of material.

  • What in the nightmare is that thumbnail. I really don't understand why it leads to so many people to click it while I find it makes me recoil in disgust.

Is something wrong with them or something wrong with me for hating that facial expression and wanting nothing to do with those videos and straight up blocking the channels so they don't show up in results.

  • --launcher-skip

And I'm talking about launcher the type you have to log in again.

Example being Ubisoft games where you get it from Steam or Epic and then have to install UPlay and then log into UPlay.

I'll even use Finals as an example which isn't DRM free. You install on Steam and go on playing with no additional login into a secondary launcher. Or you install from Gamepass with no additional login for a secondary launcher.

  • Think the complaint is where a launcher is required on top of a launcher. Like if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 from Steam, GOG, or Epic it doesn't required another launcher on top of the launcher you bought it from.

Good thing is that it does seem like majority of games don't do that. Even EA is moving away from it.

  • I left intel once Ryzen came out and reviewed well, since their motherboards were going to be supported for multiple generations. It paid off since after a CPU upgrade I don't see myself upgrading until the next gen consoles come out and drive up system requirements. Which won't be for a few years.

  • Small minority of people who care about this and end up affected will just leave for something else if custom ROMs stops being an option and dev scene dies out.

Not every Dev on F-Droid wants to hand over their info to Google.

You can argue that Google doesn't care because they are a minority and custom ROM users provide no benefit to them, which is true. But to act like people are stuck with Google if the feature they care about affects apps that interest them are stuck with Google isn't true either. They are already doing stuff that is unusual from regular users.

Don't worry mainstream won't be affected. I'm talking about the weird people sideloading, degoogling, and more likely to be running custom ROMs.

  • Fortunately this is one series that is actually finished. Books are better covering timelines before this dynasty and the ones after.

Was amazing how anticlimactic and forgettable the show made Blood and Cheese which had been hyped up to be the equivalent of the Red Wedding.

  • The people crying over this are the ones who care about sideloading. So if that aspect is gone then why stick with Android? It's definitely not for Google play apps for me.

If you want to defend how Google is bigger and won't be affected you are better off pointing out that sideloading population isn't that big, and that most users don't use it so would be fine with iPhone or Android.

  • Once I moved away from Gmail cutting off Google services became easy along with finding alternatives. Even if I use Google products like YouTube I can do it without an account with stuff like freetube to have a subscription feed locally and be able to save playlists and keep track of watch history.

So yeah even if Google products are used it becomes less account dependent, so you need a Google account less and less. And changing to a non Gmail email provider was the gateway.

  • And he's very easily bribed which corporations have caught onto.

  • But, what happens when Google decides to no longer the option to unlock the bootloader for future phones? It's the future that is the concern when it comes to the degoogle options available.

  • For the next phone I get it'll be one with good custom ROM support and sticking with a degoogled device. But, if that too stops being an option because custom ROMs stall then hoping there will be a Linux Phone by then.

  • The ones that don't sideload obviously won't care. But the ones that do are going to have little incentive to stick around if that was the main selling point for them, and the devs for non Google play apps leave because they don't want to hand over info to Google.

At that point why not go to Apple if Android no longer delivers the type of sideloading experience they desire? Apple is more polished, has longer support, battery life, and better peripherals.

And those types likely will push family to move to Apple too if they are jumping ship, since they might be the ones overseeing tech support for the family anyways.

  • Rather than degoogling telling them you will go to Apple and opt for apple services is likely the more powerful response, since that is what the regular person is more likely to do. If degoogled is used they'll likely dismiss it assuming it is just one of those niche nerds. But an exodus to Apple is a threat that is more realistic.

  • Issue is that I believe even in the EU Apple is in a position where devs have to be verified by Apple to be allowed to sideload.

So it's not a problem of if sideloading is possible, but that devs need to hand over sensitive personal information to Google to be verified to be able to offer side-loaded apps on Android. So Google is positioning themselves to fully control app installs even for non Google play apps by holding the ability to deny.

So Google is now looking to emulate the terrible sideloading state of Apple by regressing to more control by them.

  • Yeah, I now keep a note of shows that I'm interested in and then later watch it when it is completed and the final season is well reviewed. Like Andor for example. Was a very good show and I was happy I could watch at my own pace instead of 2 year gaps between seasons.

I'd have forgotten everything and lost the emotional connections I had developed for the characters if I had watched it as it aired. But most importantly forgotten so much.
