  • At least the mayor knows what's up:

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson swiftly condemned the action.

"He just wants his own secret police force that will do publicity stunts whenever his poll numbers are sinking, whenever his jobs report shows a stagnating economy, whenever he needs another distraction from his failures," he told reporters.

  • The thing is if the US just left maduro alone his regime probably would've collapsed by now. Every time anything bad happens there he can blame it on the CIA and US plots and half the time he's right so people still believe him.

If we got rid of the sanctions then the people couldn't blame anyone else but maduro for the shit economy and they maybe would oust him. But America just can't stand an independent left wing country "in there backyard"

  • It was also selected because it's a better break. In the US you usually get easter off in April and memorial day off in late May, so there's already a decent amount of spring holidays.

Whereas there's nothing between 4th of July and Thanksgiving in late november, so labor day is a good break to split up that long stretch.

  • Mormons and skiers, also a decent amount getting born there too. There fertility rate may not be positive but it's a lot better then the other states so they're relatively gaining population.

  • Then we need to stop antagonizing them and giving them a reason to get nukes. At this point they have enough institutional knowledge and resources to make one so them not doing it is more them not wanting to, ie. The ayatollahs fatwa against them.

If Israel and the US keep bombing them though and make them think the only path to safety is through nukes then maybe that fatwa goes away.

  • It's not even just the bad they're not showing, they aren't showing anything outside of a suburban straight white guys point of view. Which does reflect a lot of 80s media but doesn't reflect the experience of a lot of people in the 80s

  • Sounds like profit to me, houses and buildings got built, rent and housing prices are going down. Sucks for the megacorp though.

  • His campaign funds on hand are put at $4.4m, and his campaign is eligible for $2.2m more in matching public funds.

So mostly from small donors as the public match is only for small dollar amounts.

    Meanwhile...

Adams is barred from receiving matching campaign funds, the city campaign finance board having found he had violated related laws.

  • I agree with you that there are certain issues that will require long incremental complex change that is hard to sell to a populace addicted to short simple sound bites. I also believe there are a lot of issues that can be implemented in a congressional term that can be summarized easily, but dems refuse to do them because it would require large systemic change that there donors don't want. Messages like Medicare for all, free childcare, student loan forgiveness all funded by a wealth tax on billionaires. This is a very popular, simple message you can give to the masses while at the same time laying out those long term complex technocratic plans for those who care.

The dems are only giving those technocratic plans though, and it shows as less and less non-college educated people are voting democrat. We can say theyre just stupid sheep but those sheep are a majority of the population and if we don't cater to them, we'll never win another election.

  • I am not, nor any normal person, is gonna read that 92 page platform. I am commenting about the messaging they are giving to the masses, like it or not orders of magnitude more people see these Gavin tweets then there platform and this is what's informing there view of the democrats, and that view is terrible. They are at a 30 year low in approval rating, even with the unpopularity of trump to play off. What do you think explains this if not shitty messaging? Cause I think we can both agree there platform is nominally better then the Republicans, yet your average person doesn't believe that.

And the Republicans did have a platform, it was project 2025 and it was full of a lot of extremely unpopular shit. Did that stop them from winning all three branches of government? No, because no one reads a platform.

  • This is why democrats are still losing to trump, they can't give any sort of positive vision for the country. They're turning into reactionaries so whenever trump does some bastardized version of progressive policy, they don't say we'll do that but better, they say that's dumb and we won't do it at all. So anyone who wants the current system to change ( a majority of americans) they see trump as the only one who's even trying it.

If Trump says he's gonna bring peace to the middle east, they need to point out how shitty his plan is and how bad he is at negotiating and then give a better plan, not brag about there close connection to war mongering psychopaths in Israel.

If trump says he's gonna raise tarriffs to bring back jobs, they should point out how untargeted and useless they are and put forward a plan to use them in combination with industrial policy to make green industry in America, like China did.

If trump is taking 10% of intel to probably just sit on, they should say we'll use that stake to guarantee workers rights and to keep jobs in America, not call it communism like some reincarnation of Joseph McCarthy.

  • This is the same guy who tweeted that the progressives on San feanciscos city council should die a slow painful death.

  • Yeah, let's put up another California democrat that's too centrist to attract progressives and too California to attract middle America, it worked so well last time...

  • There are two sure things in life, death, and paying taxes to sex predators.

  • California may redraw its maps* Gavin can't actually do this unilaterally unlike in Texas and this will be put to a referendum on the November ballot.

The ballot measure won't be a sure thing even though California is very democratic, 38% voted for trump in the last election. It'll be a very off year election as well so turnout will probably very low and only those who are motivated. So the question is whose more motivated, the anti-trump resistance who want to stop him at any cost, or the conservatives in the state who are effectively having there representation taken away.

Maybe one good outcome of this is the conservatives will feel so unwelcome they'll actually follow through and fuck off to Texas and help ease the housing crisis.

  • Have you noticed a loss on libido? My understanding is that those pills reduce testosterone, which can reduce libido and everything else t does for men.

  • Why do you say she's obviously unhealthily thin? Per the article:

both models in question had medical certification proving they were in good health when the pictures were taken.

The only evidence the article gives to there unhealthiness is the protruding collarbone. As someone who is naturally very thin I can assure you that you can be healthy and have a protruding collarbone.

I understand ads are setting beauty standards that are unachievable for a lot of girls and women which causes a lot of problems, but I don't think ths solution is to mark certain body shapes as unhealthy and ban them, there is no universal healthy body shape, what is healthy for some is unhealthy for others. This isn't even getting into issues of race and other unchangeable attributes someone else might have and feel bad for not matching a standard. The solution is to ban fashion advertising in general, or at least to teenage girls, so you don't have to deal with these issues.

  • The book takes place in Oceania, which is basically the anglosphere(Britain, US, Canada etc.) Eurasia was the standin for the soviets controlling the Soviet union plus western continental Europe. East Asia was the third power that was basically greater china.
