  • A lot of common over the counter drugs like Tylenol are more risky than people assume, so the idea of one having negative effects on fetal development isn't out of left field. At the same time, not a single study pushed by this anti science ideologue can ever be trusted without corroboration by independent researchers. The risk of having a bad reaction to common medication nobody bats an eye at is often higher than the vaccines this dumbass rails against, so it's not like a stopped clock being almost right makes up for his bullshit.

  • I'm not so hopeful. Venezuela has been looking to attack their neighbor, and if there's one thing empires hate, it's rival imperial interests in their "stomping grounds." There's no good reason why Trump wouldn't want to bully them from afar as a show of strength, considering he's attacked far more dangerous countries in the middle east for that same reason. He probably wouldn't invade because he thinks forever wars are a bad idea(he's correct), which would eliminate the guerilla tactics Venezuela could pull against him. It'd be a bombing campaign that Venezuela couldn't do much against; an easy military "victory" with low short term stakes for Trump.

  • The funny part is that Trump has a long history of getting caught up in the moment and accidentally suggesting something the right hates. He would do something like suggest something like stricter gun control than anyone was asking for, only for conservatives to panic and remind him that they want the opposite. This is because he has no strong beliefs or principles, reading the room to throw out ideas until he finds those that stick.

  • It's not about talking politics, but knowing that the other person doesn't have deal breaker beliefs. Once that potential incompatibility is filtered out, then a meaningful relationship can be built.

    Also, there will always be like-minded nerds who genuinely love to talk about any special interest, including politics. Your preference isn't universal.

  • I think it was more that Pence realized Trump couldn't pull off that coup, so he wasn't gonna stick out his neck for him. If he wasn't VP then, I have no doubt he'd support Trump up until the present day, even if he has the same misgivings all ambitious right wingers have. People like him never allied with Trump because they like him, but because he wins against Democrats and politically destroys rival Republicans.

  • Just curious, what are the chances they're on high alert bc Xi, Kim Jong Un, and Putin all attended China's military parade today and they misidentified a Venezuelan ship as a threat for some reason and fired on it?

    I doubt it. This was very much intentional and premeditated to intimidate Latin America and win support of their base for wars. The alleged drug ship was a target they had no legal or tactical justification for attacking, except that the people on board are symbolically "the bad guys." It'll be framed as a crusade justified by the opioid epidemic and war on drugs amongst MAGA. At the same time, the unprovoked attack against non combatants hopes to scare Venezuela, other Latin American governments, and powerful narcotics organizations alike.

  • wtf are you talking about? He's speed running his destruction of all checks and balances, blatantly expanding presidential powers to do things that were previously unthinkable. There is no tiptoeing to be seen, only large strides with little meaningful pushback.

    I'm not worried about whoever takes over next, as the Republican party has been systematically purged of strong leadership by Trump. Maybe some extra slimy Democrat or Republican several years later will be able to capitalize on the damaged system better than Trump has, but immediately after he's gone the GOP is fucked. Against a demoralized base and an energized opposition, someone like Vance will not be able to maintain power.

    I really think many people underestimate Trump because recognizing his competence goes against some inherent beliefs they have about intelligence. They don't want to believe that such an uncultured buffoon actually had the best political instincts out of anyone in Washington for the past decade. It's easier to believe he's a puppet who succeeded because of better men than to recognize what his actual political merits are. He deserves to stand next to Hitler or Mao as a person who, despite being an idiot in many respects, had exceptional political talents that allowed them to be a powerful dictator.
