  • You could definitely pare down steamOS alot for a more user friendly but less powerful environment. Get rid of all the steam specific shit like the storefront and friends list and all the bells and whistles and just have a launcher that displays game art and title. That would still be leagues better than having a single game on each flash card.

  • Seems like a silly idea.. its not like an nvme drive takes up a ton of space so eveb a small form factor pc could have a massive drive and an interface for multiple games. Ehats the point of loading them onto sd cards if you have to already download or acquire them elsewhere? Just make a good interface that lets you scroll through a list of games. My steamdeck already does that, and lets me boot right back into a game where i left off, but doesnt make me constantly change the SD card to play a different game.

  • I mean the cyberware is a direct neural interface so presumably it must be able to manipulate and alter the levels and balance of your neurotransmitters. Im sure increasing aome to insane levels would have pretty toxic effects, like serotonin syndrome for example.

  • 2012 was pretty much peak imo. Cant really think of anything after that thats worth saving. Guess the mayans were kinda right after all. Smartphones had come out and evolved into something decent but weren't terrible yet, facebook was still kinda useful and not a propaganda cesspit, google would give you useful results, reddit was full of unique and interesting information. Tv and movies were really hitting their stride with some of the most bou dary pushing original tv series and movies hadn't all devolved to remakes and superhero rehashes, global warming was bad but people seemed concerned about it and it wasnt past the point of no return yet, youtube didnt shove a million ads down your face. Netflix was streaming content but didnt have any competitors buying up rights yet, spotify was fairly new and revolutionary still, forums still existed for all sorts of niche interests, ads werent completely pervasive everywhere, google wasn't an evil monopoly sucking up everyones data, memes were still fresh and original, gaming pretty much hit its pinnacle of graphical fidelity relative to performance costs, you could order awesome drugs off the internet unregulated (not even just the dark web, research chemicals were fucking great and hadnt started to be banned yet). Idk i could go on and on but literally everything felt like it got worse from there. I didnt even touch on productivity or the economy but it still felt like a bit of a boom in the wake of the rebound from 2008. If im missing anything good that happened post 2012 please let me know.

  • As someone who was in a similar position, i recommend getting the steamdeck and a refurbished thinkpad. This will be better and more versatile for gaming AND productivity, and probably still cost less/ take up less backpack space than a larger more powerful laptop would, especially when you factor in needing a controller. I already had a steamdeck but i picked up a cheap thinkpad for like 300$ canadian and i couldnt be happier with both. My laptop is for schoolwork and my steamdeck is for games and i often bring both to school. But when youre writing a test or late to a lecture you want to be able to just pull out a slim laptop and open it straight away, not have to boot the steamdeck into desktop mode and attach a mouse and keyboard first.

  • Games with complicated or involved stories just need to go back to having a comprehensive log or journal. That used to be a staple of big games, to the point where it could take you days to read all the lore and journal entires. That might not be fully ideal for those adult gamers either but theres definitely a comfortable middle ground where your active missions page has a little brief for each objective telling you who gave the quest, what they wanted and why. Lots of games these days can have like 20 active quest markers and give you no information about any of them beyond some random npc you talked to once wants 10 of something for some reason.

  • I expected a much bigger hit to performance when i got a 1TB sd card for my steamdeck and initially only was putting small indie games on there, but after gradually moving up to higher performance games and not really noticing a hit, i just throw everything on there now. I think most games these days are more limited by other factors than storage speed.

  • Also i think there may have been a couple games ive tried where proton-GE didnt automatically fix this. In that case, use winetricks and install the full video codec package. A combination of those two things have solved this issue with every game ive tried.

  • Linux doesnt install things like windows does. A tar file is just an archive. What you did is basically the equivalent of copying a program's Program Files. Itll still work if you just run the exe from the folder, but there's no registry entry, no start menu shortcut, no desktop shortcut until its created by you or the installer on Windows.
