  • Tbf, I'd imagine trump spends all of his time on twitter writing incoherent babble, rather than reading what anyone else has to say.

  • Wow, how is this walking corpse still vertical?

Last I saw of him was in Sasha baron Cohen's "This is America", and even then he looked like the protagonist in a parody called "weekend at Rudi's"

  • UT stands for Ubuntu touch ;) I'm already on a Linux phone. I'm talking about app development.

  • Did you read the article? Your final sentence pretty much sums up what happened.

  • True. Being mindful of which brand you buy is becoming ever more important for those of us who are privacy focused.

Volla, Jolla, fairphone, pinephone etc.. are good examples of companies that ship phones with native Linux support. You can buy them preloaded, I haven't heard any ruminations of these bootloaders being locked away, but admittedly don't know their stances on the subject. Locking down the bootloader to the point where it doesn't seem worth it seems to be more of a mainstream approach though for sure. (I still remember trying to get lineageOS on my Motorola... Just, wow).

  • Ubuntu touch is Linux based also, which is my choice due to newer hardware support over postmarket. (Currently running a volla quintus) Though I can see myself moving over to sailfish, as the default browser in UT is morph based, and creating web apps can be something of a pain due to unsupported browser issues....

All of these OS' suffer from a lack of app development though, hopefully this Google nonsense helps change that, though mass adoption is usually the precursor to app dev, hence my pie in the sky comment.

  • 100% The first past the post system definitely needs to be abolished. It's the primary reason the Tories were allowed to desolate our country, but that's a debate I've seen fail to come to fruition at least twice in my lifetime.

Creating this party addresses the more immediate threat of labour collapsing, with no real alternative for socialist minded voters. Some may choose to vote for green, but a lot would have likely abstained rather than continuing to vote these clowns in. This, provides an alternative, which if enough people sign on for, could provide the catalyst for change.

Once the ruling government is focused on social reform, then maybe we have a chance on sorting out the gerrymandered mess that is UK politics. But until then, I don't see Kiers lot even entertaining the notion, let alone changing the system.

  • Yeah I can appreciate that take mate. The level of audacity they would need to think something like this wouldn't be noticed is almost unimaginable. Lying by omission does feel like the best comparison to make regarding this.

Rest easy friend; there will be plenty more corporate nonsense for us all to jawdrop over tomorrow!

  • If you give a letter to a postman, and the recipient asks why you put "P.S: I love you" on an official piece of documentation, your first thought wouldn't be "that damn postman, opening my mail to try and enhance it".

The same is true for YouTube. People have been uploading videos for decades with them ending up on the platform the way they are uploaded, so it stands to reason that longtime users would expect this behaviour to continue, especially if there have been no Comms around any changes.

Of course Google isn't to be trusted, and anyone trusting YouTube to be ethical clearly isn't paying attention to anything. But that doesn't change the fact that youtube have intentionally hidden this change from their user base. Sure, the result was public facing, but the cause was kept secret; and that's the nuance you're overlooking.

  • Hopefully this means we see an influx of development for Linux based mobile OS'.

I realise that's a very pie in the sky dream to have. But damn it, I just want a native Firefox browser on UT.

  • It's funny to me that people use the two party race argument, using reform over conservatives, and not realising the irony in saying the same can't be done with labour.

Kiers labour is an authoritarian government cosplaying as left wingers. Enforcing the OSA, refusing to even investigate let alone restrict our nations role in the Gaza genocide & appeasing a pseudo-hostile fascist dictator at the expense of the common worker in the UK are all facets of a centre to right gov, rather than left. The party is rotten; full of bad actors only intent on kicking the can further down the same alley.

  • I wholeheartedly refute the assertion this comic makes that the word 'lock' is onomatopoeic.

  • Damn you sir, you didn't need to call me out with that last paragraph.

No, I know it wasn't my shoe, but look at how well it fits!

  • Activism like this isn't for people on Lemmy, who have already been exposed to the likes of decentralisation, open source Vs closed source etc.. its predominantly for those that still think brand name = quality.

I don't use social media these days, but i do have inactive accounts; I'm considering logging in and changing the pictures to clippy. It may have absolutely no effect, or it may be the 16th clippy PFP that someone sees, which may then prompt them to ask why everyone is changing their photo to clippy.

So whilst it won't change anything in a large way, it can act as the catalyst for those who are still unaware to try and educate themselves on the subject, and hopefully lead to them leaving Microsoft products altogether like you've alluded to.

For example; I'm already not using any Microsoft products, so continuing to not use their products is less impactful than by changing my mainstream photos to clippy, even if it has no effect.

We can try to tell people about the evils of microsoft until we're blue in the face... But if they "research" it themselves, it's far more likely to stick.

  • Oh I see what you're talking about. I thought you meant the link to fffmpegs forgejo site rather than the crosspost link.

Maybe it's just the app I'm using, but sync was able to redirect me to the Open source community that this was originally posted to. (It's hosted on lemmy.ml, but the poster is from Lemmy.zip, which is why the post link is Lemmy.zip).

When I open via browser though, I see the OSA block that you're referring too... An interesting difference for sure. But I suppose if all posts from lemmy.zip were blocked, we wouldn't be seeing this one either, so I'm guessing it's just post shares that won't work?

  • You sure that the issue is geographical? I'm in the UK and was able to access the site without using a VPN or anything like that.

  • It's funny because you still seem to be hung up on "my toys are more expensive than yours, therefore I win" mentality.

That logic didn't work for the US in Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan. And it didn't work for Russia in Ukraine.

You're talking about a country full of drunks.

Underestimating your enemy is my best guess as to where the US goes so wrong when invading "weaker" countries, but I'm no expert.

  • I'm not sure if this is unique to the UK or not, but if you don't have a full licence, you can apply for a provisional; the pre-requisites being the following:

    • be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
    • be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away (which isn't checked or enforced until the driving test anyway).
    • have been given permission to live in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) for at least 185 days.
    • £34

So most people have a licence in the UK, regardless of whether they can drive. Usually so we don't have to carry our passports to the pub when we turn 18. (Which also isn't unheard of here).

  • Can confirm we don't have an official identification card, let alone electronic ones.

We use driving licences for that purpose. And kids in my area get child identification cards, but I'm not sure if that's a national thing or not. (The name of the card has the county in it, hence why I'm not sure).
