Remember, we got to loop it through Jones!

  • Oh wow! I would have never imagined there would be a sequel to the Deathstalker series.

It's one of the top "sword and sandles" b-movies from the 80s and early 90s.

I am not sure how well a modern sequel will hold up (the originals never took themselves too seriously), but if I get a chance, I will even go watch this in the cinema in English.

  • I watched it for the first time a few months ago, without knowing much about it or how it was viewed.

I thought it was a decent experience. Not unbelievably good, somewhat better than OK.

That being said, I love isolated island settings, so maybe that tipped the scale a little bit for me.

  • Some of the Batman ones are OK. Watchmen and Antman were fine.

I still remember going to see Ironman 1 or 2 in the cinema what seems like 15+ years ago.

There was a scene where the oligarch is captured by the Taliban and he is held hostage in a cave. He then builds an ironman costume (from scrap?) in the cave and kicks the Taliban's ass. I was laughing at the stupidity of the scene.

It's at that moment I realized this stuff is not for me.

  • Leon clearly has controversial themes, but I don't see any explicit pedophilia. Yes, some scenes (I am refering to the international version) push boundaries somewhat, but Leon explicitly rejects her advances and is almost pressured by Mathilda to let her take part in the assassinations.

Never thought about The 5th Element as pedophilic in any way, but I guess I can see some vague movements in that direction.

  • I don't mind new takes on a series and even occasional inconsistencies and unbelievable moments. For example, I really enjoyed the Aliens: Phalanx novel even though it suffers from many of the same issues I noticed in the first three episodes of Alien: Earth (distracting YA themes, unbelievable plot devices, plot pacing), but it offered it's own experience. While reading the novel, I was curious about the world, I wanted to find out what happens next.

I just didn't feel anything while watching the first three episodes, it felt like some random scenes without much point other than to make a somewhat generic Alien themed streaming mass market action-scifi show.

I might check out E05 at a later date. But for now, the series is on hold for me.

I will note that I didn't watch Foundation (not interested in watching a random show with a Foundation setting, it's like reading a fanfic) and I immediately dropped The Man in the High Castle after 1-2 episodes once I realized they merely took the setting and completely ignored the main point of the book.

  • Is this remake or a story continuation (unrelated to the book)?

  • I gave up after the third episode. And it took a lot of effort to watch E02 and E03.

This is the first Alien production where I didn't really care what was going on.

I don't mind a novel take on a series, but this was merely a "mainstream adaption for a streaming service" production. I am good.

  • I thought it was pretty good. It was also a somewhat realistic depiction of F1 (as much as a mainstream racing movie can be realistic) and they integrated some well known moments from F1 history.

  • Isn't that true of most movies that Apatow directed?

Comedies produced by Apatow are IMO way better (for the most part).

  • While it's not a good movie even by the standards of b-movies, I enjoy watching it.

That being said, I would never recommend it unless I knew the person is a 90s b-movie coneseur.

  • I clarified what I meant by economic dead end. It's not going to happen tomorrow or even in ten years. But absolute corruption, rollback of democracy and a population where a large number of people support crime and corruption will have a caustic effect in the long term. It's a straw man to suggest that I was claiming an immense collapse in American economic might.

At one point the "sun never set on the British empire" and now the British empire is no more. There are also examples of economies that were once top end, but are now closer to middle income.

I don't think you understand the extent to which American "soft power" is being eroded right now. What countries have you lived in? What languages other than English do you speak? Do you have close friends in other countries?

Of course America is major economy, that doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't exist. Just look at the state of Chinese products in the early 2000s and where they are now.

People don't like thugs and liars, especially ones who are constantly parroting polemics about "freedom for this and that" while engaging in criminality and opposing democracy.

  • Of course it can happen elsewhere.

Just US has a massive influence on tech platforms, and they are currently under-going an oligarch takeover (oligarch influence was already bad irrespective of whether the far right or centre right was in power).

Mind you I am not anti-American. I have largely always defended the US as a matter of pragmatism (it is the largest and most influential democracy-leaning country with a measure of respect for human right). US has done really bad things, but they have done good things as well. I can't say the same about say China or Russia.

  • Not an Apple user, so I didn't know about this. Extremely disappointing.

It really does seem avoiding any and all American services/products (to the extent possible, with exceptions where reasonable) is the only way forward.

I am increasingly coming to the conclusion that the US is a ethical, cultural and even economic dead end. Yes even economic, only a fool would believe intense corruption and broad support of criminality and corruption among the population will not have any negative effects in the future.

  • Wait, what the hell?

I can't believe this, who the hell are they to decide what I should install?

They are welcome to curate their own store, but sideloading concerns only the user.

Hopefully, the EU and other jurisdictions block this.

    Fucking corrupt American oligarchs.

  • What happened to Dexter: The Killer Haemorrhoids S69?

  • Leaving Las Vegas was also really good.

  • I liked S02 much more than S01.

S01 is better made and more consistent, but I thought the theme and the ending of S02 was pretty unique for an American series.

S04 was OK and had a good start but IMO it went nowhere. S02 (and S01 for that matter) had a much more coherent beginning, middle and end structure.

  • Counter arguement: well written critical reviews can often help you find (and enjoy) unique and/or indie productions.

  • Watched E01 and E02, this was the first Alien production where I didn't care what was going on.

Way too much quirkyness, faux-edgyness and Peter Pan "appeal to YA demographic" BS.

Lots of annoying, lazyily written characters (trillionaire kid, flea market Roy Batty, prince Hermit in the magical plot armour).

I don't mind a completely novel take on Alien (big fan of Aliens: Phalanx even though its very YA and Alien: Isolation), but the execution of Alien: Earth reeks of the feces of Disney executives.

Apple TV+ spent $20B on original content. If only people actually watched.
