  • Endless Os is solid! It’s my go to for ppl who don’t know jack about Linux. But it’s also just a really well put together distro.

My favorite feature by far is just Auto updates. It’s the only distro I’ve used where Auto updates just work. Everything stays updated zero tweaks required no interruption of workflow. It’s honestly so good at it that I forget that it even updates. And that doesn’t just go for the OS that goes for apps too.

It also runs well on just about any hardware I’ve ever put it on. I just put it on my buddy’s Toshiba satellite laptop that’s rocking an I5 4200u and a 5400rpm hard drive. Takes a second to boot but doesn’t miss a beat once it’s up and running.

It is very flatpak centric but if you’re looking for that Chrome OS feel it’s about as close as you can get.

  • 18 years of running linux on my computers because windows is insufferable in some way or form. Windows 11 Pro was actually fairly decent at first I even liked the UI despite its issues. Then updates broke and even digging into the cmd prompt tools couldn’t fix it. Which is just insane to me as a company that is hoovering up my data cant figure out updates. I dont even care all that much about the privacy aspect if it just worked. Hell its why I use google services. But every version of windows I have used since XP has had some sort of fatal error that could only be fixed with a clean install. When that happens its my sign to go on a distro hop.

Dark patterns have also just become the norm in Windows and Mac OS. Honestly kind of sad because both OS’s at one point in time had there high points where they felt like they were built for the user. Now they are glorified billboards that run apps.

  • This! I literally give Windows a chance every version. I even kind of liked Windows 11 this go around.

But something always breaks and no matter how much I trouble shoot the fix is to reinstall windows. To which I say screw that and start distro hoping.

11 with 2022 gaming laptop just stopped updating. The only non native app I had on the thing was STEAM! I have been using Linux for 18 years because it’s the only way I know how to fix Windows.

  • The whole purpose of Lemmy and the feddiverse is to be anticorpate.

I have been a foss fanboy most of my life so it’s a welcoming community and concept. But I get how weird it would be to suddenly join a community that basically says the mainstream way of thinking is wrong when it comes to the Internet.

That said I think Twitter Reddit and Facebook have all proven that it is. Centralized homogeneous platforms are just bad. Once you’re passed the fomo effect it becomes clear that they are not necessary. They are just tools and should be thrown away when they are no longer useful. Reddit could of maintained its status quo and we would all be there. Instead they felt they were “essential” to our lives so they could do what they wanted. It’s just not and this instance of Lemmy is just as disposable.

Lemmy will become more mainstream and more like old reddit with the addition of ppl like you. Variety is the spice of life so I think that’s a good thing. As someone who has lurked on Lemmy for years I can tell you it’s changed dramatically in just a couple weeks. Mostly for the better.
