  • Publicly funded fibre can be provider agnostic. Starlink can't. Unless Musk is arguing for the nationalization of Starlink, which frankly I could get behind.

  • Headline: Trump says Putin agrees with him US should not have mail-in voting

    FTFY Subby.

  • I speak for all of Canada when I say that you are fucking nuts.

  • I prefer to unfold a map to read it, as opposed to doing origami just to figure out where I'm going.

  • Beat me to it.

  • Navigation isn't the only purpose of maps. You can display geographical, social, economic, and a whole host of other datasets on to maps. And since maps with fidelity to lat/long lines are no longer a requirement for navigation, there's a good argument for accurately displaying relative positioning and size.

  • I love a happy ending

  • communists and anarchists have very, very little in common.

  • He only controlled his response to it (which wasn’t great, as that money was used to allow banks to pay bonuses and buy up foreclosed properties while people laid off for no fault of their own lost their homes).

That 'not great' response prevented the complete and imminent collapse of the entire global economy. I'm not sure what the phenomenon of discounting the much worse outcome is once it is avoided, but I'm pretty sure it has a name.

It's the same phenomenon that has people say that the covid crisis was overblown and vaccination was unnecessary because it subsided on its own, ignoring the impact that billions of people getting vaccinated had.

  • After 30 years of marriage, my wife floated the idea of turning this on. I looked at her like she had two heads.

Why would anyone be willfully surveilled? You know its not just your partner that has access to that data when you have location services enabled.

  • Same.

  • It's not libel if it's true.

  • Shit, I assumed they already had.

  • Exactly. Just something else to ratfuck.

  • Sure it does. That's the way that Canada and Mexico are planning anyways. We just need a bit of runway to unwind generations of trade.

  • There's actually research that shows that farming under solar cover increases moisture retention and the crop yields of certain plants. You'll also note that a lot of these installations are on marginal land- steep hillsides, arid land, and even floating on reservoirs. The latter slows the rate of evaporation from the reservoir as well, so it has a net environmental benefit.

You're right though, not every installation is perfect. But we seldom ask these same questions when it's a new housing development or a Walmart with a moat of paved parking around it.

  • What a horrific way to go. And man I feel for that ground crew that had to witness it.

  • Exactly. It's not like google is the only indexer out there. And if this cuts into their search dominance, so much the better.
