    1. Fuck preorders
    2. This isn't a post complaining that Silksong brought the networks down, it's people celebrating it, because it's amazing to see a small studio doing so well and absolutely crushing their launch - not because they had an insane marketing budget, but because the community is just organically so excited for it. And all at a low price that puts big studios to shame.
  • I dont personally speak with AI for reassurance, and I don't think it's a good idea to do so.

In fact, I recently commented here on a post about a teen who committed suicide at least partly due to Chat GPT - specifically pointing out the danger of depending on a machine for fake empathy when you need to be talking to a real person.

I appreciate I didn't make that side of my position clear in the comment here in this thread, and that's because it wasn't the aspect I really wanted to highlight.

My point isn't that speaking to an AI is a good idea - it isn't - its that this is something a lot of people will obviously end up doing, and that it is men especially who are liable to succumb to this the worst because of the way society expects men to behave.

Men and teen boys especially struggle voicing their mental problems with others, either professionally or in their personal life. So it's no surprise they will leap at a "solution" that is free, and keeps what they say private from anyone they know. But it's not a solution, it's a disaster in disguise.

The thing that needs fixing here is the way mental health is stigmatised, that prevents people speaking freely and getting the support they need. That's not a new problem, it's the same problem as ever, and what the AI epedemic is doing is simply shining a new spotlight on that.

  • No shit.

Other humans don't want to hear about men's mental health issues, because men are supposed to be stoic and strong and infallible, and if we arent achieving that, we've failed at being men.

But AIs don't judge, and they don't cost anything either. I'm hardly surprised.

  • Same for me with Markdown. Love the simplicity.

I went through a phase a while back of evaluating a bunch of note-taking and to-do apps, and hating almost all of them for being proprietary products with so much vendor lock-in.

I eventually settled on Joplin because it just uses plain old markdown, and allows you to selfhost the storage back-end so you own your data.

So because of that, my recipes are just a folder (and some subfolders) with markdown in Joplin.

  • Tap to pay is a choice, with a viable alternative.

You could choose to NOT use tap to pay, carry a bank card, and it would have basically no impact on your ability to conduct your life.

But I agree the banking app itself is a big problem, and something that cannot be lived without.

  • Depends on what basis one is comparing it.

They are very different scales of game, but they both exist within the same economic realities.

Big studios seem to be working on the basis that just because they spend millions on a game, the game automatically becomes worth whatever price tag they want to slap on it - as if it's a natural law that pumping in more money should directly translate to more revenue, without fail.

But it turns out the value of a game is not what publishers hope its worth - its what players percieve it is worth.

So it's no surprise that indie games with amazing price-to-value ratios are seeing a surge, while big studios are struggling and don't seem to have any ability to understand why their business model isn't working.

Publishers are all shocked pikachu when their big budget games fall flat, but If people don't want to buy an $80 game it's not their fault - it's your fault for not doing enough to justify the price tag.

My message to studios isn't "your games should all be $20" (although some of them should) it's "you should provide value that matches the price tag" - and Silksong over here just laid down the gauntlet as a game which looks set to deliver tonnes of value for relatively little cost.

  • Take note AAA studios - this is how you do it.

With this pricing, Silksong may be the only game this year that I'll actually purchase on release day.

  • A person with a hammer? Why does it need to be difficult :P

Or just go with direct address

"If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

  • The only thing on my phone that's allowed to notify me are messaging apps, and even then, only for direct messages, not groups.

Social media, games, sites, and everything else can all fuck right off - you do not get to demand my attention unbidden, and if you misbehave you are going in the trash.

  • I feel like I'm in the same boat. I don't have a solution, just wanted to say I understand your perspective.

I've completely ditched Microsoft from my life and I'd love to ditch Apple too, but there's just nothing on the market I've seen which matches the build and usability of macbook hardware.

With the old Intel macs it was simple enough to run Linux but now with Apple Silicon it's not on the cards. I love what the Asahi team have been doing and I hope they keep doing it, but it's not ready for primetime yet.

And so I've reached the same annoying conclusion - for the moment I'm stuck with Mac, and therefore stuck with macos too.

  • Have to admit I quite enjoyed the 2018-2021 TV series too. Cheesy but fun, and a three-season run that actually managed to wrap things up before it got cancelled, which is an increasing rarity.

  • That comes with its own risks because Windows has been known to destroy dual boot setups when doing updates. Not always, but it can happen and it's burnt people.

Dual booting also makes it harder when you decide to get rid of windows fully, because you might yourself accidentally screw your bootloader as part of removing windows.

The option I would personally recommend if you are unsure is to disconnect your windows hard drive, keep it safe, and install Linux on a separate drive. Then you can always drive swap back if you need and you know everything is safe.

You can even put the windows drive back in after installing Linux, and then just use your BIOS boot drive selector to switch where you are booting from. Each drive has it's own boot record in that case, so there's less risk of any accidents.

  • My biggest peeve with JSON when I'm forced to use it as a configuration format is that it doesn't have any syntactical support for comments.

So I can't even add any notes to the file.

  • I watched a brilliant analysis a while back about what the first Bourne movie would be like if it was limited to only Bourne's perspective, progressing through the story following only him, and discovering things about his identity and past only at the times he himself does.

It honestly seemed brilliant, and I'd love them to take some risks and make a movie like that, something different that stands a chance of becoming iconic.

What I think we'll actually get is yet another generic spy thriller that fails to achieve even half what the original Bourne Identity did. But there we go.

  • That would be pretty genius/because even if they were positive for something else (not opiates) management would still be like "This whole batch of tests is totally scuffed, we can't use it."

  • For some people the only things that brings them joy are 1) winning 2) making other people suffer

  • If E3 was still a thing I imagine the execs would have felt inclined to keep a few projects going, just to avoid the public humiliation.

  • You can certainly charge a phone with a PD laptop charger. PD does negotiate, so it will only give the device what the device indicates it can support.

I use my laptop charger with my android phone frequently if I'm out and about.
