We are moving this community to https://lemmy.world/c/ps5
Subscribe here: !ps5@lemmy.world
Why?
Reason #1: Inciting Incident
- As some of you may be aware, the country of Mali is apparently beginning to take back .ml top level domains. This has already affected other communities and has the potential to affect lemmy.ml (See here for context). This is preemptive act to ensure that what we have build so far is not destroyed.
Reason #2: This community does not align well with lemmy.ml
- Lemmy.ml is a FOSS focused instance. At the time of the creation of lemmy.ml/c/ps5, lemmy.world was not even on the map. I established this community very early before the reddit migration and wanted to establish it on what I believed at the time was the “flagship” instance for better discoverability. A lot has changed since then, and I believe this change will be in the best interest of this community moving forward. The Admins on lemmy.world have been wonderful and responsive, and I trust lemmy.world will be a great home for us.
- Other people have personal issues with the lemmy.ml instance and its admins, so while this move will help others who dislike lemmy.ml confidently join our community, it is not the primary reason for migrating.
What will happen to lemmy.ml/c/ps5?
- Great question. I would love to hear back from other community members on this subject. My initial plans are to pin this thread indefinitely at the top and cease posting news to this community. I will post weekly cross-posts in this community to the discussion threads on lemmy.world/c/ps5, which will have the comments locked, and a comment recommending others subscribe to the new community.
- For other users posting here, I will still allow posts, but I will comment in each thread with a reminder to post to the new community. I do not intend to lock these posts at this point in time, however if substantial discussion is happening in these threads I may lock them down.
Please let me know your thoughts below!

P.S. Special thanks to @Hurts@lemmy.world for transferring me the new community!
I think you should restrict this one and disallow new posts probably
I am considering it, but I am thinking I will just intercept posts to the old location and comment to let them know in a more welcoming, conversational manner. I know some people post from mobile and it can be tricky to see announcements if you dont follow communities as closely. If it doesnt gain traction, then I will lock it. Thanks for the advice.
Maybe someone will want to take over this comm, so you should give people the option.
Whether the idea of PS5 aligns with the philosophy of lemmy.ml, is a question for them.
Did you hear about the whole thing with !android@lemmy.world? This is not the same, but you never know.
Ed: Btw looks like my Matrix is buggy today. Yes you can post the announcement in !playstation@lemmy.world
(Just make it clear it’s the ps5-specific community that’s moving and not ours.)
I will keep that in mind, but it is clear that PS5 does not align with a FOSS-centric community. I am also aware of android@lemmy.world, but given that the lemmy.ml devs/admins closed new community creation for the reason that it was becoming too much of a general instance, I do not anticipate that they will seek to reopen it. However, they may choose to do so as it is their instance.
Cool. I’ll unsubscribe too to make the old one look less appealing on community searches
Thanks! I plan to cross post the weekly discussion threads to the old community (with locked comments). These have been the posts with the most engagement, so they will be the most visible. Also, that way I can gently remind people without the old community going completely dark. Best to unsub so you dont get these in duplicate.

I would love to hear back from other community members on this subject.
Weeeell maybe you could tell other people, like those who have links in their sidebar, so they know to update it… Such as, say, I dunno… 🤔
Haha, I had sent you a matrix message! But I guess you saw this first. Thanks in advance!
Something like a public post would be great for that!

Right after I announced the migration I stated that I was going to leave the community open, so that if new people made posts I could have conversations and help more naturally migrate people over, rather than just hard closing it.
Well, I guess spammers saw this as an opportunity to flood the old community with gifs of women pooping. Not kidding. I’m no longer hungry. They were posting things like “I’m glad you’re migrating away from lemmy.ml, check out what the devs are saying about the Mali situation here.” And linking to scat porn.
Anyway, because I had said I was leaving the community open and now had to lock it, I figured I would make a post and say why.
Should I remove it? Is it confusing?
Edit: I went ahead and updated the post with more context to prevent confusion.

I can’t believe you made that joke lol. 🤢
Yeah, I’ve thought of that. I’m still a mod there and I’ll check and lock posts accordingly. For visibility, my intent is to cross post at least our weekly discussion threads from here to the old community. These threads get the most attention and have the most conversation, so for people who don’t check Lemmy everyday, they’re most likely to participate in these threads. This way there can be a sort of weekly reminder to these subscribers to come to the new community.
