The Dems should go further, hold a press conference, and officially declare that the Republican Party is officially dead, replaced by the MAGA Party. All future Democratic communications will only refer to the MAGA Party.
The MAGA Party does not adhere to any of the basic tenets of the Republican Party - smaller government, lower taxes, individual liberty, family values, economic responsibility, etc., and therefore should not be claiming to be Republican. The Republican Party is as dead as the Whigs, and should only be referred to in an historical and scholarly context.
Make it official, and then stick to it, and watch the MAGA Nazis howl.

What's the alternative, let the red states gerrymander and then just hope and pray that our new Republican-run house does the right thing and outlaws their one advantage in governing?
Newsom isn't doing this in a vacuum, California has had a really well liked nonpartisan districting committee. Texas and other red States have gone with the nuclear option and CA is responding in kind - even more importantly, this is something that has to be voted on by the residents of CA in a special election, rather than by a set of politicians already benefitting from gerrymandering.
I absolutely hate that it has to be done, but as a CA resident I will be voting for it, and I will be pressuring my elected representatives to work towards passing federal legislation outlawing the practice and bringing things to a more even playing field.
The do-nothing alternative is not an option.
The alternative is the Dems adopting a legitimate progressive platform. Liberals will stand on their heads before they support a progressive candidate. Case-in-point Zohran Mamdani.
There’s a clear path for gaining the support of the the greater American public. They kneecapped Bernie in 2016 and they’ll do it again and again until we make it clear we won’t budge. If Newsome runs for president we are virtually guaranteed a Vance presidency in 2028. Mark my words.
MAGAs always forget that all this fun stuff they think of to attack America is a two-edged sword that can be wielded against them, as well.
Unfortunately, Democrats tend to forget it as well.

How the trips will affect these office holders long-term is uncertain. However, for many, the trips never stop reverberating — such as for San Francisco’s then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, who was part of an Israel trip in May 2008.
Now lieutenant governor of California, Newsom, along with wife Jennifer Seibel, his fiancée at that time, took part in a mission sponsored by the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation. In Israel, Newsom toured high-tech companies, met with counterparts in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, and received security briefings at the Lebanese and West Bank borders.
He said this week he was struck by “how remarkably small Israel is. From a security perspective [the trip] reinforced what I always believed: Standing there right on the border, you understand the politics a lot better.”
Like other Bay Area politicians, Newsom said his pre-trip expectations were formed from exposure to media.
“Invariably that was framed in context of conflict, of stress, of friction,” he said. “I experienced something 180 degrees different. He said the trip helped him connect more deeply with the economic and cultural ties between Israel and the Bay Area. Along those lines, as lieutenant governor he has pushed for the opening of a permanent California trade office in Israel.
There used to be one there, and in other parts of the world, but all were eliminated in budget cuts in 2003.
“I thought this was an overreaction,” Newsom said. “Rather than reforming it, they eliminated it. California is competing with states like Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, which all have foreign offices. California has none anywhere.”
Moreover, said Newsom, a onetime wine merchant and restaurateur, “I say this all the time: Some of the best food I ever had was in Israel.”

A common tactic that Republicans claim violates the state Constitution. Yet, they've never objected to the use of this common tactic before.

I'm practically all the way on the other coast from California, essentially a continent away, and I am fully aware of what it going on there. If your constituents are that clueless about what's happening in your state right now, 27 more days isn't going to fix what's wrong with them.
And this is why you should've spent more time acting and less time grandstanding Newsom. Stop threatening and just fucking do what you need to do.

In a month CA lawyers / legislators found a creative way around the 2008 / 2010 redistricting laws, they drafted new maps, they found a way around the legislative waiting periods, and they’re about get legislators to vote yes in their last session before Nov.

So, I did a little digging, and apparently Prop 54 amended the state constitution in pertinent part as follows:
Given that the legislature hasn't been voted on yet, the publishing on the internet could be done immediately and satisfy the constitution. Alternatively, if the Democrats want to keep the plan secret until the last minute, Newsom could provide a written declaration of emergency, and since Democrats have a supermajority, they could easily provide the concurrence without a single Republican vote. Accordingly, I don't see the Republicans winning on this issue.
