No, but I was actually able to play some solo on Linux when I tested it, and the single player mod SPT works on Linux

It's the corporate way of saying "we're too lazy/cheap to fix any bug, so please lower your standards."
I thought Fortnite originally stayed in beta so that they could ship updates to consoles with fewer hurdles. nowadays I have no idea if that's still a thing
I would say that most of the "legacy" live games are. Warframe is to the point that the developers, Digital Extremes, outright make fun of it being a 13 year old beta and jokes about what Soulframe counts as these days.
And a lot of it is because they launched into beta/early access/whatever before there was even a model for what that means.
Contrast that with the "newer" games like tarkov that assign milestones to leaving beta. Well, it used to be that leaving beta meant that tarkov would go to Steam but now it mostly is just being done so they can keep releasing expansions/modes without needing to put it in the deluxe preorder edition.

Conceptually?
It is a looter shooter (a shlooter, if you will) cranked up to 11. Since now you need to actually be vulnerable while you spend time sorting through the loot pinata you just shot rather than holding a button to vacuum up all the purples and oranges.
And when you get into an actual gunfight with someone, it genuinely feels like you are in a big budget "prestige" action film as you play cat and mouse, barely miss someone, take a shot to your chest plate, and are frantically trying to wrap a bandage around your arm while listening for footsteps or, even worse, a grenade.
Then you add the humans into the mess and it all goes to shit. Because now? They know where everything that matters for progression is on a map and just camp it. There is no gunfight because they are just aiming at where you head will be when you bend down to get the key you need to unlock a vendor.
So then you need to watch a bunch of videos online to learn where the popular camping spots are for every extraction and objective. Which means THEY need to watch videos to learn where to hide to camp those anti-camping spots and so forth. And, because Tarkov is so hardcore, nobody has any maps or compasses and you need to memorize the layout of every single map visually.
And if you DO luck out and actually get one of those gunfights? Yeah.. the other person has been playing the game for 90 hours a week and has L5 body armor that you literally can't penetrate without half a mag. And they have thermal scopes and armor piercing rounds that shred through your plate carrier instantly.
And that assumes they aren't just hacking where you get the telltale sound of a burst going from between the center of your head to just above it as your body falls before the audio shuts off.
All that said: Tarkov with the SPTarkov mod is actually fucking amazing. Although you still have the problem of needing to memorize maps because paper maps cost a lot of money and take up slots because The Failed State That Is Totally Ukraine doesn't have photocopiers or even scraps of paper to jot down landmarks on while staring at one of the few maps in The Legally Distinct And Much Less Interesting Zone.
Another fun tarkov-ism. Because the game is so realistic, you have no idea if you are injured unless you bring up your inventory screen or have suffered a catastrophic injury. So you basically have to bring up the inventory screen any time you hop off a ledge or go through the bushes in case you broke your leg or got snagged on some barbed wire and need to apply a tourniquet.
As an SPTarkov player, there's modded solutions for both those problems. Feel free to DM if you need help with your modding setup :)
It's an interesting game and it has some good ideas, but it's incredibly janky. I've seen single devs develop games in less than a year that have better animations.
But despite it's rather dated look and it's clunky controls it does have a very large map and a large play account per map. That's quite attractive to some people.
Although personally I suspect people are going to come up with a better version of the game in battlefield via portal.

I've been reading a lot of comments that make it sound like portal is a new thing, but it was in 2042 too and was incredibly underwhelming. Did something new happen with it that I don't know about?
I'm not saying that it's not fun because the core mechanic is interesting. But this implementation is just not ok for most people.
Super hyped for 1.0, been playing for about 2 years now 1.4kish hours and its just gets more fun with every update. Can't wait to actually be able to escape. Perfect game if you want an FPS that doesn't require turbo fast uber accurate wrist breaking flick shots. Hell chilling in one place for 5-10 is a smart strategy sometimes.
Really looking forward to getting back into this. I keep trying these fast past multiplayer shooters and I generally get wrecked. Picked up EFT a few years ago and really enjoyed. Do you have any advice on finding groups to play with? I’m sure their discord has a LFG channel most likely.
Honestly a good way I found is with small streamers on twitch. Find someone who looks cool and say hi, most of the community is nice and if you ask for help on quests or if they play with viewers a good amount will say yes. This leads to getting into smaller discords with generally pretty cool people in them. Some of my recommendations are MortakkW, WhosJason, and McHayla. All pretty good people. All different vibes.
Did they ever solve all the hacking issues? Apparently it was impossible to get in a match without at least a couple cheaters everytime
They spent the past month or two making this a wipe for ultra sweaties (Flea Market doesn't unlock until level 80 or some nonsense) so that only the most diehard of fans are playing and they refuse to accept that the game they spend 90 hours a week watching other people play has problems.
There is no limit to the stretching that can be done. There are many games stretching farther. I don’t think we have seen the limit yet.
The limit is when people stop rewarding this behaviour by giving them money. So yeah no sign of hitting it.
Star citizen
Star citizen isn't an example of an open beta that got stretched out. It's an example of a scam.
A game of similar scope to star citizen is starship simulator, except that isn't a scam and, oh look, it's making surprisingly better progress (there still isn't anything to actually do in it yet but it's much further along in much shorter period of time). You can tell it isn't a scam because people aren't being asked to pay extra to access some more unfinished content.
I mean Terraria and Factorio both took years if not a decade to hit 1.0
Genuinely forgot this game existed. I was over it before COVID lockdowns.

No, they just scammed the people that bought the previously most expensive version that was supposed to include all future DLC's. Well, BSG decided that they wanted more money and reneged on that, removing the version and putting up a new and even more expensive one...

Quite a bit, honestly as a regular player of the single-player mod, content and mechanic wise things have gotten way better.
It's honestly the execution of matchmaking, server performance (or lack thereof), and certain balance choices holding the game back. Other than that it's really solid, and if you mod, you can solve all 3 of those problems.
As a player of both games, fuck both 'betas'. Shit gets old waiting for ambitious games.
