  • Good to know; thank you!

That said, our PF posts and content don't seem to be getting much FV traction the last 1.5wks or so. Or maybe it's just me, I don't know.

    But also:
Is there actually a way to search the FV that includes PieFed content? Because so far it all seems to be Lemmy-oriented, you know?

  • Haven't used it for a while, but Reveddit used to be able to give good info on what stuff of yours might have been shadow-removed, and why.

    https://www.reveddit.com/

  • c/shittyfoodporn !

  • La Boulette À Mamie

Haha, my little A2-level French is starting to serve me well!

    Anyway, looks delish. oO
But I also wanna comment that caramelized onions are like the nuclear bomb of food porn! (and if you're mainly 'veggie' like me, check out Lebanese Lentils, s'il vous plaît)

Also, I gotta admit-- and holy smokes! Beef & potatoes is like a combination handed down by the food gods. (and actually fairly nutritious, too, as potatoes are a 'super food')

  • Oh yeah, I agree a lot about the evolution issue, and I think the lack of such is directly reflected in people commonly feeling overwhelmed by this modern life. Also common for us to be poor at perceiving global issues of the day (like sustainability), and being easily manipulated in to voting against our own interests as kind of a knee-jerk reaction to all that.

  • Okay, gotcha.

I guess my main reason for piping up there is that the more I've learned from history, the more I've noticed a wider and wider gap between what it's like living in actual communes (which to me are probably the closest thing to our traditional living system, i.e. "tribes"), and the huge autocracies which declared themselves "communist."

The other problem is that many in the west (especially the USA) were either disingenuous or completely ignorant about what was really going on over there, and of course The Red Scare became an awful lever and power-play which ruined a lot of peoples lives.

Bah, sorry for all the ranting.

  • Plastic cheese

Haha. So... American or Cheez Whiz?

  • I get corporations fuckin’ suck, but communism???

It's not even actual communism either, but more like tankie-ism. Stalin's USSR and Mao's China weren't communist either, but more like dictatorships / autocracies dressed up with 'communist principles.' But I digress, maybe.

  • Wot wot... no toasting of the buns?!

    Heresy!

Btw, one way to level up your burger game is to drop the cheese in to a pan and let it melt a good bit, then place the bun on top and twirl until all the cheese gets transferred. Then combine with everything else. It's simply the bee's knees.

Another trick I picked up from Bobby Flay was to coat both sides of the burger with black pepper before grilling. It greatly helps to lock in moisture and add a slight spiciness, if that's your thing. No idea if that works in a pan, though...

  • Fair enough, and I think I'm mostly in agreement with you.

I think people almost always mean well - and of course those public instances were needed to get things off the ground but I'm going to say that I'd rather see that they eventually die off as smaller servers become easier to run and people actually have personal connections with whoever runs the server they are using (ideally themselves)

I've seen it speculated (or opined) that this tends to be where things are headed, based on the state of coming tech, ease of use, and current models. Something like that, anyway.

  • I don't think (or assume) you're wrong across various examples of such, duderino, but you're also spinning it right there in to a laughably-giant web of conspiracy (so to speak) simply to meet the needs of your hurt feelings and self-righteousness.

You and the downvoters are sinking in to the worst aspects of our natural state (tribalism), while completely whiffing on the better aspects of tribalism, which (to me?) is to recognise friends where you can see them, and not assume 'evil' about everyone around you.

  • Interesting stuff!
Based on my location, I like the idea of harvesting common weeds where possible, such as dandelion. Nutritious, and grows easily.

Another thing I've enjoyed is to grow herbs and whatnot indoors. Indeed, I suspect there's a lot more space and useful light than I realise, but some research needs to be done...

  • Looking at that place now, it's crazy that people are still putting up with the bullshit. Everyone is getting censored/banned, comments removed, threads the admins don't like (especially anti Trump/Elon or pro-Palestine) get locked almost immediately. Reddit is literally bottom of the porta potty enshittified.

Reddit still has a lot of value for me, and I still see loads of critical comments almost every day tearing down certain topics & figures that you touch on above. If the censoring / banning were really that bad, I doubt I'd be able to read all that on a regular basis across their site.

What I learned after 12 years on reddit: the admins are Nazi sympathizers, pedo protectors, and propaganda enablers.

I think it's probably simpler than that: 1) they're a big social media site out to make money first and foremost, 2) they want to avoid agitating powerful figures of the day, and 3) they see their users moreso as convenient assets than individual voices who might stir up trouble for them. It's pretty much just the corporate model of the day in a late-stage capitalist reality.

My point here is that I'd rather not buy in to and perpetuate false assumptions and false narratives. I don't want to just assume that all their admins are really as bad as you think, when in reality many of them might just be trying to give users a fair shake. Many might in fact be 'resisting.'

  • Ah, thanks.
I'm low on sleep ATM, and maybe a bit conditioned towards the usual way people bring up 'title gore'. Well done, then.

  • þorny issues aside, what would your improved title be, if I may ask?

  • Nice one!

I do get that sometimes you don't want to mess too much with the softness of the bread, as it can kind of highlight the contrast in interior ingredients, whatever they might be.

Me, I don't have any kind of toaster myself, but use my range's spiral elements to toast (or grill) as needed. The problem is consistency, so next time I think I might try the air fryer out, instead. Brushing with a little oil first usually helps, but we'll see...

  • "Savior complex" seems way over the top when talking about what you're describing, which to me is a perfectly normal, healthy reaction for instance-runners and /c-runners.

While true that such thoughts must still bow to reality, in many cases these instance-runners really are doing an incredible, multi-faceted job, and it's true to at least some extent that they deserve to be thanked in various ways.

Meanwhile, my former instance (Lemm.ee, the 3rd largest at the time) went down essentially due to too many headaches created by asshole users. It's a real problem everywhere, and I think the average user here does owe some thanks for projects like this which are trying to serve their interests and not monetise them. In which threads like this are perfectly useful & appropriate IMO.

  • My gosh, is there anything baking soda can't do? oO

So thanks for that tip. I make beans all the time, so will be jumping on that one immediately.

Btw, I've found that cooking and rehydrating beans at the same time works perfectly well for just about all varieties, and should especially combine well with pressure cooking. True-- you might lose some of the texture, and maybe not get as full of a Maillard Reaction as otherwise, but I haven't found these to be significant problems. So OP, beans shouldn't take anywhere near 8hrs to soak, in future.

Side note: I happened to get myself a grain grinder because of how long my favorite bean (kidney) took to hydrate & cook. Unfortunately, something indeed gets lost that way, and the beans simply aren't as good as when whole.

  • Also toast the bun.

It kind of blows my mind the number of 'sandwich & pattie' situations in which the cooks don't toast the buns. It almost always helps.
