What is your main/main rotation for weapons?
Any particular reason or story to it?
I hop weapons a lot, but always fall back on SnS. For the longest time I avoided SnS since it was treated by the community back then as a weak beginner weapon and something players upgrade from once they learn how to play, but I love its versatility. It’s the most comfortable for me when learning new fights due to its speed and precision, and there are always tons of weapons to build and play with since raw/element/status are all viable. Wide range para SnS when playing with friends is always fun.
I’ve only played MHW. I started with the SnS, and it’s still my main weapon. I love the versatility! Recently I’ve started to try Switch Axe and it’s been really fun, but I’ve not yet mastered as well as SnS. I’d like to try Heavy Bowgun, but the ammunition management scares me.
I remember SnS being very fun in world. It’s always been old reliable. Was my main in FU. Had some of the coolest designs as well. And the old hop-in chop could get you around wind pressure which used to be a big problem.
Obviously I encourage you to keep swagging, you’ll get there. It’s simple yet complex, but you have so much room to riff, like jazz 😁.
Don’t be too afraid of ammo management. You typically only end up using a few, not the whole gun arsenal.
World was the first game that I played through, and my biggest complaint at the time was the commitment to animation. Movement seemed slow, so I stuck with incest glaive as a workaround to my lack of positional knowledge. Once I tried aerial hammer in Generations Ultimate, it was all over. I’ve been a big bonk main ever since, through GU, Iceborne, Rise, Sunbreak, and 4U. Great sword is now second place of usage, picked up for those tail breaks. It’s funny looking back at my initial complaints about positioning and animation commitment, when my two favorite weapons ended up being the most reliant on those two points. Knowing the specific monster’s fight really helped. In GU I fought Tetsucabra a good 30 times after picking up hammer, because he was so fun to anticipate his jumps in order to land those big smacks to the face.
Unga bunga brother. That’s why I always try all the weapons each title to see what they’ve done. Always hated GS and Hammer for being so slow and committal. Both were a good time in RiseBreak with the switch skill option. Surge slash was fun as hell and hammer’s ungas were at their most satisfying and bungaest.
I’ve been a lance main for a while now, but I’ve also mained longsword, greatsword, switchaxe, and dual blades.
Dual blades and longsword helped me get into the series.
A fellow multi-tool enjoyer. I don’t begrudge or look down on those that only play one thing, but I definitely don’t understand them.
Honestly, I totally get it. The weapons are pretty involved, even more so now, so spending time to learn a whole new weapon can be kinda daunting.
Tbh even I usually stick to a single weapon per game.
As much as I love the game, I have to switch it up for my sanity occasionally. But even since my first game, some monsters are just easier/harder with certain weapons, so I was used to switching.
Charge blade. It’s what I’ve played in GU, Worldborne, and Risebreak. It’s just such a fun weapon, and I love the flexibility of being able to switch between the quick sword mode and the powerful axe mode, plus how incredibly flashy it is.
Right on. I was so excited when it showed up in 4U. Easily slipped into my main rotation. Love the pizza cutter addition of fifth gen too.
I use the switch axe. It’s all I’ve ever used. I’m not good enough at videogames to pick up another weapon and get good with it without a considerable amount of time and effort put into it. So I’m a switch axe man for life probably.
Also grinding a whole new set of weapons sounds tedious as fuck.
Swag life ain’t much, but it’s honest work. Nah, swaglife is extra as fuck. YOU THROW THE AXE BEHIND YOUR BACK NOW.
Re: set grinding, there can be some overlap, but yeah, if you don’t love set building, it can get tedious. Keeping up 4+ armor sets and qurio augments for ~30 total weapons definitely gave RiseBreak legs for me, but I know that isn’t for everyone.
Been using Gunlance since MHFU. I remember my reason for using being that it is both a melee and a range weapon. I tried sniping a Velociprey back then, wondered why it didn’t hit, realized it was more of a shotgun weapon. Literally picked it up because I thought GL was cool looking. Basically it is my main though I have been broadening my portfolio. In MHW, Charge Blade was an easy switch since GL and CB share some similar skills (Guard and Artillery). I also got into SnS for its perfect rush. In Rise, Greatsword got its fair share of use, is probably my second main under GL.
Boomsticking is a noble profession, but seems to get the ass end of the stick for QoL and balance, based on what I read. I’ve never clicked with it, even in RiseBreak. And, pre-Shockproof, I was growing hateful of GLers for Bullet Barrage. But that jet propulsion system is cool as shit and looks fun.
When I play alone I use Dual Blades, but in a group I play gunlance. I think Dual Blades are stupid fun. It feels like playing a beat em up game like marvel alliance. And most of the weapons are fun to look at.
Yeah, DBs are the button mash weapon, sort of always have been. But gogdamn if that spine pinwheel isn’t fun as hell. And spin to win into the face in RiseBreak seems fun too.
Gen 1/2 dual blades were precision weapons, surprisingly. You were rooted to the spot and locked into animations a lot more than in later games, without the benefit of constant stunlocking like you’d get with GS or hammer. You often couldn’t reach weakpoints either, so they were all about carefully chipping at the feet to get trips and then going ham for a few seconds after they topple. Very fun weapons, but mashing would get you killed quickly.
True. I did use them a bit in MHFU and recall the longer animation locks you mention. I guess the input just never felt precise to me even if the weapon needed to be used in such a way.
MHW: Insect Glaive, branching out into hammer and the guns. I like infinite combo streams and high mobility, so my choice was very clear. Then the bowguns and hammer just added some variety, but I never really got that good with them. Then I know the basics but completely suck with all the rest.
Ever since the day Tri blessed us with the Swaggiest of Axes, it’s been my go-to, where I start all titles and know It will just fit while I learn the new lay of the land. Styling on mons while I morb all over the place just fits like a glove.
But I also maintain a healthy rotation of Lance, CB, and Bow as well.
Bow is usually reserved for endgame since it typically is at its best then.
Picked up Charge Blade and really mained it in 4U. These days, I can’t really resist the pizza cutter now and then.
I toyed with Lance in FU, but it also became more of what it is today in Tri when it got the counter thrust and its just been getting better since.in world I loved the hunting horn, but it doesn’t feel the same in rise so I thought i’d give the lance a shot and it turns out it’s really fun. ramming into monsters trying to run away is always a good time.
unga bunga shield lance is a choice i’ll stand by.
