Without any bots chiming in, how have you actually enjoyed this one?

My family is going away for a week at end of month and I want to take advantage by being a gamer again for 7 days. Is ff16 fun? Is it good?

There is a demo if you want to try before you buy. Your progress carries onto the main game, too.
It’s definitely worth a go, it’s an incredible game and worth every reward it gets.

Tbh I would take the plunge and get it.
It’s an incredibly ‘Adult’ Final Fantasy with an amazing story. The action is slightly repetitive at the begining but as you get stronger going through the story you end up with more powers than you know what to do with (fortunately there is a highly customisable training mode to try out your new powers and come up with a skill set that suits you!).
I’m pretty sure this game will win Game of the Year awards!

I beat it a few days ago. I enjoyed it and I’m not a huge Final Fantasy fan. The last one I played was on PS2, I think it might have been FFX. It’s got really long cut scenes, like some of them are 30 minutes long but the voice acting is really good. The fighting is fun and the boss fights are fuckin crazy. The environments are gorgeous but seemed really locked down with invisible walls. Overall I feel like I got my money’s worth.

This is what turned me off of it. The production values and voice acting was really awesome. But I felt like the demo’s cutscenes were so long that I was just watching a movie the whole time.

I beat the game last week and I loved it. The story, characters, soundtrack, voice acting, and gameplay are all excellent. I’ll probably be starting New Game Plus soon.

Ignore past FF games. Think more a long the lines of God of War.

Things that it does a lot better than GoW imo: There’s a LOT of enemy variety. It’s actually impressive how much. 50% of the enemies aren’t rando zombies like GoW.

A lot of the fights are easy. But, kind of refreshing to steam roll trash mobs after GoW if I’m honest.

There’s a shit ton of amazing mini-boss and boss fights and the ratio between that and trash mobs is really high. Some of the bosses are hard at all of them at least require you to play close attention.

The writing and polish isn’t as good as God of War but…. It feels better for the game length. I personally felt like GoW overstayed it’s welcome in both games. While the FF writing isn’t as good it’s more fitting of a longer game. It’s still a good story, it just has some rough polish.

The RPG aspect is essentially identical to GoW. Gear and leveling. If you had swapped the systems both games I wouldn’t even notice. They’re both really shallow and unlock some basic combos.

There’s also little exploration, even compared to GoW. On the one hand I hated a lot of the GoW back tracking treasure hunt loop after a while. It’s nice to play linear games sometimes. On the other hand, it could’ve done with some well done reasons to explore the maps.

So long winded way of saying if you like the linear single player action adventure games that Sony is known for its fantastic. If you want some grand jrpg maybe don’t pick it up right now if you’re in the mood for that.

Thanks. I’m coming off of playing elden ring basically exclusively for about a year - but generally I only play games for an hr or 90 minutes a night. So this upcoming week will be time to really dig into something

I’ll be buying a ps5 next week too so no chance to demo it – I’d just pick up the ff16 bundle ps5 if I decide it’s the game I want to settle down with.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Lot of people and review say it’s game of thrones inspired. And there’s definitely elements of that in the storytelling. But this is the team that came from FF tactics and vagrant story back in the day. Which already had this heavy middle age ages high fantasy stroytelling with deep deep characters. So the pedigree is there.

The game itself so far I’ve played is so solid. The combo can be mashy or intricate depending on how much effort you want to focus on. Watching combo tutes can help understand and make it more fun

All in all I’m really engaged with the story and the characters. There’s obviously some shortcomings but nothing that hurts the overall experience. By far the best FF since 10 for me.

If you are fan of fast-paced over-the-top action like DMC, and love the Eikons (summoned beasts) in FF franchise, you would absolutely have a blast

      It’s… fine.

The sound is terrible overall, horrible mixing with some things loud and some quiet.

Graphics are pretty but not good. Stop frame looks great, but the animation that happens over and over is terrible. Things like sheathing a sword are poorly timed and just… jarring.

Luminance is off. It just seems to sdr to hdr expand and not add anything useful. So you have the old school grey haze on most scenes. Possibly to lower gpu use.

You MUST turn on action mode. The pretty mode is terrible with massive frame drops.

Battles are a mess. Could be fun, should be fun, but the graphics look like they drop to 480p with pretty colors and it’s impossible to see anything. You end up just timing button presses by rote bs what your see.

It’s ok. If you want to see characters say the word “fuck” over and over again and that is the basis on your decision, it’s a must buy. Otherwise personally I would wait for patches and a significant sale.
